Post-Production : Special effects makeup by Jessica Hanson

Special effects makeup

Anyone know of a reputable online course to learn special effects makeup for film? Is there more of a need for makeup artists or special effects makeup artists in film?

Christopher Vaughan

stan winston school is a good online resource for Fx artists.

Jessica Hanson

Thank you!

Rachael Saltzman

Much more need for hair and makeup overall than fx makeup (every film uses straight makeup). Cosmetology courses will cover a lot of that. More valuable is someone who can do hair and makeup. FX makeup is super fun - you'll waste fewer materials and get farther faster with a good instructor, but the Winston videos are quite good.

Jessica Hanson

Rachael, does someone have to have a cosmetologist license in order to be concidered for a job doing makeup in the industry? What about a just some classes and experience?

Rachael Saltzman

Depends upon the job. An unpaid learning job? Probably not. A job where the whole film can be delayed if an actor gets an eye infection or a rash? Yeah. Triple that for FX makeup.

You might try looking into Joe Blasco , I think they have some online courses .He is one of the best cinema make up artist in the world .A great unknown to most people

Rachael Saltzman

Also - you can get a certified makeup artist trying to break in for a modest kit fee. So yeah, I wouldn't bother with someone who didn't know their stuff.

Thank you guys so much! I'm looking into incorporating makeup into my massage practice. I find there isn't as much of a need for massage in the film industry as I was hoping. :-/

Rachael Saltzman

There's actually a lot. All of my film friends get massages regularly. There's not usually time on set, and too many distractions, even during lunch. I did work on one where they had two masseuses show up during lunch once to do mini massages. Our bodies are our livelihoods, so we're VERY picky.

Jessica Hanson

Well I've worked on four films here, but they're hard to get. Please spread the word over in Louisiana! Lol! I got into this area specifically for the film industry because of the long hours, constant traveling and hotels. Plus just the work in general in very physical. I wish more people would fit massage into the budget. They would get a more productive crew and more focused and relaxed actors! :)

Thanks!

I would say there is a equal need for all techniques of cinema make up .,but being skilled in every one can certainly set you a part from those who aren't .. That's why after I graduate from Full Sail ,I will go to either Joe Blasco or Cinema make up school L.A and take the masters make up course ,and learn everything from Avant guard ,air brushing , Prosthetics , fantasy ,gore ,and beyond . Even digital make up effects . I love VFX and SPFX cinema make up .CGI is cool ,and I want to learn how to do VFX and 3D CGI ,but there's something a lot more magical when it's done with real supplies .I just know I want to learn it all . . I hope you find the perfect online class .

Rachael Saltzman

There absolutely isn't, as straight makeup is used for everything - airbrush has become a more common skill set due to HD. FX makeup pays better and requires a broader skillset though.

I'm applying to QC Academy. http://www.qcmakeupacademy.com/

Hi Jessica. Check out the Stan Winston School of Character Arts, it's not free but really worth subscribing if you want to learn. Hope this helps and they cover every subject you can think of. https://www.stanwinstonschool.com/

Christopher Vaughan

yes Stan Winston rocks. I have the unlimited subscription and it rocks.

Dick Smith also has a home course I've heard is quite good, but it's not online. To answer your second question, the honest truth is that as a makeup artist effects are only about 10% of what I do. Most of my work is simple corrective and beauty makeup, getting actors camera-ready. If you focus only of special effects, you may have trouble finding steady work (which can be hard enough even if you do both).
