Producing : Getting my sci-fi pilot created by Curtis Matthews

Getting my sci-fi pilot created

I'm new to the business side of this industry, and really want to meet people who are looking to create a science "realism" tv series. My idea roots from science fiction, but I've begun writing a series that looks at a plausible near future in space exploration/asteroid mining. My reason for writing this is my love for space exploration as well as film. The part I'm finding hardest right now is finding people to create or produce a pilot, and I'm sure this goes without saying. Does anyone have any suggestions for me? If you have even the slightest interest, by all means send me a message, or check out my project :).

Where are you out of?

Do you mean location, or school?

Location.

I'm from Manitoba my friend.

Market your script as straight "sci fi". Anyone intrigued by this genre will listen to your premise, Anyone who isn't looking for this genre won't be swayed by any variation of it.

Curtis Matthews

You're right, the majority of people won't necessarily look for any variation of sci-fi, I totally agree with you, and I'll maybe try pitching it that way to see if the response is different. However, I've also received numerous comments whether online or verbally that this hook is intrigueing to those who crave a science fiction film with properly elaborated pseudo science. Kind of like the film "deep impact," which goes without saying that it was far more plausible than "Armageddon" :P. But thanks for the advice! I'll attack this pitch a couple of different ways.

Sci-Fi realism .... aka good sci-fi. Tell your best story, create characters the audience will care about, as in love or hate, put them in situations that are challenging, complex, and do not have easily predictable outcomes. You are a story teller first and foremost as a film maker, and the story must connect with the audience.

Curtis Matthews

Thank you Robert. I wasn't sure how to classify my genre. At first I thought about calling it something similar to "Good Sci-fi" but it sounded like I was insulting anyone writing other forms of sci-fi. But if that's the proper way of saying it, I'll proceed with that :). As for the non-predictable outcomes, and characters everyone can love, these aspects of course can always be improved. I'm not a writer by profession, so this does take me some time to review and compare my work.

Spent two years of my life trying to get 'Welcome Tomorrow', a futurist magazine show hosted by Jimmy Doohan off the ground. At the time, there had been no such thing. To no avail. Today, there are many shows dealing with the subject. Timing is everything!

If you take a look at the Science Channel, you can take tips from the real science shows, though some of the ones they have been showing lately are a bit speculative about alien worlds and also space travel. I like the idea of an asteroid mining series as a root for a new tv series, since most of the ones we have been getting have grounded us on Earth. However, something like that takes more money than the ones in production right now (LOL) so you would have to pitch it to people who have experience with science fiction, not just anybody. I might be interested in getting involved, but I'm much too busy writing my own books to invest the time. Check out my book, "Destiny's Forge", which was based on fan fiction I wrote years ago. But a realism series cannot rely on theories. The science has to be proven or plausible. Just start by fleshing out an outline that makes sense to you and go from there. For a real series, you have to plan out the whole thing from the beginning so you don't go astray. That's about all I can help you with for now. Good luck.

I made it up. I didn't know how else to properly define it, but what I really mean is a science fiction genre that uses logical decision making by characters, and rational thought process when necessary, as well as science that does not break the laws of thermodynamics, physics etc.. Other forms of pseudo science are also introduced that could plausibly be invoked in the near future. If you would like me to explain further I'd be more than happy too :).

Slightest interest. (OK, more than that. HA HA) I'm interested to help out -- what can I do from SF? (Write, check story/scenes, etc?) Since you're in Canada AND doing asteroid mining, you can use your snow. Just call it 'thalide snow' or 'white burn' and say that contact on exposed flesh is instant death? :)

Peter Pedersen

greetings waterplanetman. a writer mostly acquainted with aliens offers his service. reads, feedback and suggestions. besides producing of sorts is an option. but looks like REkz KaRZ is on to your case as well - the more the merrier i say ;) .

Curtis Matthews

Haha that white burn thing sounds like a game I probably played when I was 8. Still a good project idea if there was a biological disaster based plot :P. Right now I wouldn't mind some help with dialogue in my script. It's to my understanding that writers usually sit down with other writers to work out the awkwardness or unrealistic conversations. Otherwise I've been going back and forth with a couple buddies of mine for future predictions and story ideas. Well as soon as I fix up a couple holes in my plot which I have just found, I'd be privileged to take you guys on board! The holes won't take too long to fix, probably a week or two, I already know what I need to do, just finding the time to write is the tricky part.
