Hi all, I am working on a new version of my documentary with the aim to screen it and eventually sell it to TV channels.( for those who wants to know more about the topic of the film just go to my page). We decided first to create a new trailer, more professional, and to present it to the people of the industry..I have no idea if it's the best way to proceed but on the same time, I want to be careful. There are a lot of contradictory testimonies on the web so any professional advice is welcomed. Any idea about the price of a documentary? any idea about how to proceed for selling? what kind of legal contract do you have to sign? thanks!!
If you go with any distributers, pls. make sure it's 'non-exclusive' & re-newable...reputable distro's should allow this...a distrocompany that is not a major cannot guarantee that you will reach all the markets & may just be adding your movies to their catalogues to look good...also, there is createspace.com; via AMAZON. That will help you distribute yourself in U.S.[w/worldwide option], or, Indieflix.com; to help U distro, WORLDWIDE..both are non-exclusive]...I hope this help.
thanks Tony, what about selling the doc to production companies or TV channels? Do I have to ask for the same agreement? cheers!
thanks Jerome that's pretty hopeful. I was just wondering that if I give the exclusivity ( and makes sense) of my documentary. Would I'll be still able to present it to festivals for example? will I'll be still the "owner" of the piece of work or do I loose it? what about the commercialization of a DVD? Should I ask for royalties? thanks for the help! i appreciate it :)
In our case, American Harmony did festivals in 2009 (Boulder, Sedona, Nashville, Honolulu, Las Vegas, Waterfront, and won Best Doc at San Diego), then a limited theatrical release in 30 cities during 2009/2010 through our theatrical distributor (Abramorama). Initial DVD release was through Abramorama in Summer 2010, but we re-released through Breaking Glass Pictures in Sept. 2011. We're also pursuing a four wall release plan (which you can download from our website) through the membership organization of our doc subject.
