Book trailers

Hey folks, I was wondering if anyone out here have done, or are interested in doing book trailers? If you're not familiar with the concept, here is one I designed for my children's book Royal Prince Vince http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O1kB4o4TOOY. I know a lot of authors who are wigging out because their publishers are charging outrageous prices for these 3-5 minute trailers, and I thought I could connect creatives from here to creative authors who want book trailers but don't have that skill set. A lot are looking for live action trailers (Something like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jpQK4sLfk1A) Anyone out there? And what would you conservatively charge?

Steve O'Brien

Hello friend, I liked that clip. I wrote a non-fictional account of my life growing up in NYC during the 1970's (funny thing is that I refer to KARMA quite a bit in my life book). I like the concept of the video = book promo. I would be interested in hearing more about it, as well as how I may be able to barter for services. -Peace

Heidi Angell

Is your account a screenplay or a book? Sounds interesting!

Annika de Groot

I am fascinated by them. Looking at both videos, the static one could be done for a few hundfred dollars. The other one is up in the thousands, considering talent, editing, music rights, etc. I'm busy on a project right now, but would love to talk to you more about doing some book trailers. I've edited quite a lot of commercials - take a look at my reel if you feel so inclined - http://youtu.be/WwNJluMVpKw .And my prices are always negotiable. :)

Yazmine Tatiana

I would like more information and I'm very easy on negotiating prices :)

Steve O'Brien

@Heidi, Tales of a Sinner is a book that I would like to write as a screenplay

Heidi Angell

@Steve, very cool. Is it already published? I do book reviews and would love to review for you, if you'd like to send me a PDF. @Annika, when you say thousands, were you thinking high or low? I was thinking low, but one guy's publisher was asking for $9,000 and wouldn't let him see samples of other reviews (which makes me wonder if the quality was even as good as the second video!) Anyway, @ Yazmina and Annika, I've added you both to my network and would be happy to send anyone looking for specific recommendations your way! Thanks!!

Yazmine Tatiana

@Heidi, Thank you :)

Annika de Groot

Hey Heidi, Here's a nice book trailer - take a look: http://youtu.be/7lUpK68bYFI Also, I realized a year back I made a sort of book trailer for my own book here: http://youtu.be/mwQUzZURWHk

Chris Wilson

That would be totally sweet! I'm down. I currently do directing producing, filming and editing solo on these promo films for local creatives and will be traveling this summer and fall to do more. Check out my work here: http://youtube.com/cleighstudios

Awesome guys! I'll definitely recommend folks check you guys out first!

http://youtu.be/1F4ab83UYOo Great trailer for my book FRACTURE The Secret enemy Saga, created by O. G. Tomes. Check it out!

Annika de Groot

Lovely eBook trailer, Virginia! What programs were used? After Effects? Final Cut Pro?

Annika de Groot

@Heidi, if you look at all the actors and set ups, you're looking at several thousand dollars (over $5000 at least) . $9000 sounds about right for something as complex as a live action book trailer, but I would definitely want to see samples before plunking down that kind of money. So since most authors don't have that kind of money to play with (yet), I'd suggest keeping it really simple and fairly short.

I think it is a great idea! If anyone is looking, look into Gideon's Loop, it's a new sci-fi book about good versus evil with a twist and in the near future would make a great movie in the right hands, spread the word for me to all the sci-fi readers that you know and give the book the boost it needs, thanksfor your support!

Virginia Mckevitt

I've had a couple of people say that FRACTURE The Secret Enemy Saga would be a great movie, and I believe the trailer has a lot to do with that [a few 5 star reviews doesn't hurt either] lol.

Anne Miles

We can do book trailers, but I don't think live action are really necessary and would be cost prohibitive. We price per-project :-) If you wanted to do live action I'd find some film school students and ask them for help!

Heidi Angell

Anne, I agree. With a few exceptions, most books can be done without the live action trailers. I think they look nicer and it isn't confusing the for audience. What is a typical range for your trailers?

Anne Miles

We have a pretty high demand for our services, which range widely and our availability is limited so I don't want to give a range for us as it may not be typical? We are $75 an hour and we would not just do a trailer for someone, we do full marketing plans. The reason for that is that we want you to actually sell, not to just take your money. LOL. A low end project for us starts at $3500 and goes up from there and usually includes an online marketing plan, web site, and then whatever viral tools we deem necessary. But a video like the one you did would only take us about a day to produce and deliver, so if we did just that it would be around $750. I'm working with three nonfiction authors right now, they don't get trailers! We did a sharable childrens book in pdf format for one, are doing a youtube channel for another and then have set up a huge megablog for the third, with plans for video podcasts. The podcast lady has published 17 books by various publishers and is fairly well known in her niche ;-) But I am posting resources on here where if you listen, you can go to find those resources and roll your own solutions. so watch for that ;-) A trailer can be effective if it goes viral and thats a big if. So if you do one it has to be something people will want to share or talk about. Don't just do a trailer to do a trailer.

Virginia Mckevitt

Just a comment. My trailer for FRACTURE The Secret Enemy Saga has not gone viral (that would be cool) but it has gotten FRACTURE a lot of attention. I have it on my blog http://vmmckevitt.blogspot.com/ and facebook page and shoot it anywhere that I can get attention. I am doing a book signing at K-Mart in Centre, Alabama Saturday and they are going to stream it throughout the store. The trailer is well done and I have O. G. Tomes to thank for that. Works for me!

MJ Brewer

I have the software and experience to complete a book trailer for a reasonable amount of money within a short amount of time. Let me know how many slides you will be using, if they are stills or videos, and what your turn-around time is. We can talk about the specifics.
