Short Film Looking for Composer

Hello! Earlier this year I filmed a short film titled "The Choice." We originally had a composer on board, but he's been out of contact. I have an email in to him currently, but if he doesn't respond within the next few days, I'll need a new composer. The film is locked down -- we need a composer's preference as to when he wants the film to score it, as in, before, after, during grading and such. It's a short, we have it around 6 minutes 30 sec. Looking for a composer to keep in mind to bring on board if needed; no pay, but credit and copy. Post below or message me if interested! Thanks!

Antonio Villaronga

Hi there, Check out my site - www.equalsmusic.co.uk I have also scored my own short film which is currently in competitions and have scored an action film. What sort if style are you looking for? I'd love to know more! Thanks Joe

Ellecina Eck

I wanted to say thank you to all the composers that responded! I checked out every single website made available to me, and was truly blown away by everyone's work. I've found a composer that I believe is a wonderful fit, but am very thankful for the many responses I got. Best wishes to you all! Ellecina

Tom Rasely

EE- Well, of course I wish that the composer was me, but I did want to say a few things. 1) I am glad that you found a composer whose work suits your project; 2) I am very gratified to hear that you checked all of our work- that had to be time consuming; and 3) I am very glad that you let us all know. So many times I submit work to "opportunities" or requests, or even contests, and I never hear anything. You have done well by all of us, and I wish you all success with your project!

Joe Farr

Indeed, just to echo the points above. Thanks for getting back to us.

Ellecina Eck

Tom and Joe: I've experienced rejection-by-silence many times when it comes to submitting my writing. It's not pleasant, so I made a decision a while ago to not put others through that. For my last film, I let every single actor, out of forty or so, know that I had received their info; I would then follow up, letting them know that they hadn't been cast. I consider it just a polite thing to do. My time is valuable, and your time is valuable; it's not in me to leave good people, who put themselves out there for sake of their craft, second-guessing all the time. This world has plenty of decision-makers that leave others hanging. I'm just trying not to be one of them.

Tom Smith

thank you, it is very considerate.

Matt Toms

Yep, would like to echo my appreciation for the way you go about things, Ellecina. I wish everyone was as thoughtful and thorough! Good luck with your project!

Victor Spiegel

interested.

Leonard Wolf

You may get a good composer for free but a little money will go a long way in getting both good AND reliable... just a thought for future reference :-)

Deanna Rashell

One thing I did for my series was to go to the web, search the free movie music sites, download a bunch of clips and place them in the movie, so essentially I did my own sound using others creations, it took some time but came out great and was actually quite fun!

Dave Yowell

Deanna, sounds like a copyright nightmare. Be careful of doing this, what might appear to be free or "Royalty Free" usually has a lot of catches in the small print and rightly so. Intellectual property of any kind is owned by someone somewhere and if the production becomes a big success, there will be people coming out of the woodwork, making a claim for sure!

Leonard Wolf

I agree, David. Then there is Karma though I suppose lots of folk don't believe in it. I think there are, at the least, some local musicians around any video storyteller that can help and be very reasonable and helpful based on your situation. "Free" on the internet ain't always free.

Deanna Rashell

No copywrite issues, it's a FREE music site, I forget the name of it but it's fully legal, they sell music too but have a huge selection of free clips.

Dave Yowell

Deanna, probably the synch fee is free but if the production goes on to be broadcast in anyway publically, then the music would accrue "performance" royalties. In order for the musicians / composers to then receive their fair share of blanket royalties paid by most broadcasters, venues etc., there is a system called "cue sheet" reporting. If you can't even remember where you got the music from, then you probably didn't bother reading any small print / download agreement - a sure fire recipe for legal problems down the road (if as I said, it goes on to be a commercial success in any way). If you want to know a bit more about the legal obligations of using any music together with the moving image, you can see a fact sheet from here: http://amazingworldmusic.com/legal.php and make sure you go on to read the rest because these are legal issues that all film makers should know: http://amazingworldmusic.com/moredetail.php And finally we also offer a weekly round of free tracks and even a monthly free trial sub in which the user gets to access the whole library absolutely free of charge. The only caveat is that if you go on to use the music in a public broadcast of any kind, you must fill in a cue sheet: http://amazingworldmusic.com/cuesheet-creator.php Let me know if you (or anyone else reading this) would like to take up the offer of the free sub and I will set it up for you. Just contact me via the email form on the website. http://amazingworldmusic.com/contactus.php

Deanna Rashell

Hi, I did my research, it's all free.

Tom Rasely

Deanna- I want to vehemently agree with David and Jim. Also, wouldn't it have been nice to have gotten someone (say) from this site to write you some music all your own, even with the idea of doing for free until some royalties might have gotten generated? Even so, there are those among us who would have enjoyed the credits. Yes, that free music is available, but you've certainly gone a great distance to keep live musicians from getting some screen time. I am disappointed.

Deanna Rashell

PS I'm not discounting your work at all, I'm just stating this for filmmakers on super low budgets that still want to have cool music.

Nicholas Patrick

Hopefully we will work together. http://Nicholas-Patrick.com

Dave Yowell

Deanna, read carefully Freestockmusic's legal agreement. Starting from clause 4, things get very murky. http://www.freestockmusic.com/license-agreement/ Basically they are absolving themselves from any liability from any legal action that might occur via the creators of the INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY that they are giving away. This means that potentially, the REAL owners of the music could and most probably would chase you, if your film was a huge roaring success and they heard about it. Believe me, I have had first hand experience of this kind of situation. My lawyers had the user (Walt Disney Productions) over a barrel. They settled out of court and a short snippet of percussion used in the Lion King, earned me and my colleague, about 100 times what it would have cost them, had someone in their production team done things legally correctly! Sites like http://www.freestockmusic.com are just exploiters who take advantage of the naivity of both the creators and users of music and as Leonard says, not such good Kharma. I understand your (slightly naive) attitude of just wanting to use some "really cool music", but no serious professional should take that kind of risk, aside from the Kharmic side of things. Unfortunately, the internet has created a huge sea of exploitative sharks who prey on both people like you and naive musicians who are struggling to pay their rent through their art. I would bet that the creators of the music you used had no idea who you are or that you used their music. So sorry for the rather stern lecture, but these things need to be said :)

Leonard Wolf

Deanna, is it a good idea to believe everything you read on the internet? Additionally, at some point, if someone showed up with proof that their music was being used without their permission they could demand you go find all copies and destroy them and demand statutory damages as high as $150,000 even if it hadn't been a profitable film. Then you'd need a lawyer I imagine.

Alistair Melville

Be very careful.......what you sow you reap .................this is a wolf dressed in sheep's clothing !! It may bite you big time !! Its like this on the one hand they offer you "free music" but on the other they are waiting to take you to the cleaners Big Time !! Don't touch this kind of music with a barge pole.

Leonard Wolf

Hadn't even thought about that Alistar ... good point!

Tom Rasely

These are all very good points, and I hope that Deanna is considering them seriously. For me, the bottom line here is that Stage 32 is supposed to be a "Networking" site. A place where film people can make contact with, and potentially work with, other film people. What's going on with this particular project is that the filmmaker is telling us how she neatly sidestepped all of us. Someone who would go out of their way NOT to find a composer willing to supply appropriate music, either for free or "on spec", is probably doing the same thing with all aspect of her production; and then I have to wonder why they're here at all.

Dave Yowell

HI Jim...indeed, but no use being bitter....it's just the march of a changing landscape and a general dumbing down brought about by advancing technology and the the internet. I closed my commercial studio in London down, almost nine years ago due to falling business, and just went "home studio" for my own personal projects. I also diversified into the online selling of ready made production/library music, but with strict legalities about users needing to fill out cue sheets and with a sliding scale of synch fees depending on the budget and type of the production. We even give away a few free tracks per week, but again with tight regulation regarding reporting and usage in order to at least get back some performance royalties for our composers and ourselves as publisher. And Deanna...if you're still bothering to read any of this......you sure kicked up a storm.....ha ha ha!!!!! Going to have a quick search to see if I can track down your film next.........

Alistair Melville

Indeed so Tom, one has to guard against arrogance at all times.........if it starts creeping in the backdoor of your production or into your music then one we end up doing is alienating ourselves from everybody. Sadly this is what Deanna has done. By cutting out the real composers who may have helped her out hear she has left herself open to attack from yet unseen directions. We all at times need to eat humble pie and just let something go that we thought was of benefit but actually turns out to be a real pain in the ass. But you see its so hard for us as humans to admit that sometimes we made a genuine mistake and just say sorry I screwed this one up but I am willing to give it another try and trust my connections here and many of the great composers here will get behind me and we can all make her project into something really special that has been the outcome of real friendship and collaboration instead of just stealing someone's god given talent and using it for free without having even known them...............this is why Stage 32 really works.........its a place where we can really consider very carefully all our options with other people in the industry and not feel intimidated or threatened in anyway into making a wrong decision based on "dubious" information to say the least. So Deanna in a strange way thank you for bring all this up and laying on the table for all of us to look at. Please do consider all that has been shared here before you make any final decision that may effect the rest of your career.
