Hi Tyler, I'm new to the business.. At what point can you call yourself an actor? I'm in the process of the student film route... nothing paid yet. Most of the time when people ask what I do, I tell them my regular job, but I don't mention the acting. Darin

Darin, strange how in the creative field how there is a hesitation to tell people what you do... There are no awards required to call yourself an actor, no paychecks needed, no accolades given. The only thing that needs to happen is for you to call yourself an actor and believe in it. Not surprisingly I have had the same issues of calling myself a film maker or an actor because I don't have a lot of credits... but if its what I am doing, and want to do, who is going to say otherwise? Not to mention, it does wonders for your mental health when pursuing creative fields to know you are confident to refer to yourself as an 'actor' or 'writer'... once you get over that hump it removes a bit of the mystique of everything feels far more attainable.

Hey Darin, Looks like Thomas beat me to it...but I totally agree with what he's saying. Calling yourself an actor has nothing to do with your credits or if you get paid or not. If you are pursuing the craft and you WANT to work professionally, than you can call yourself an actor. 99% of the actors I know in LA have other jobs to financially support their acting career. Unless you are a series regular or you book several national commercials a year, you probably have another job. I have to pay rent and bills, and I'm not at the point where my acting can do all of that. Thomas is right, it feels great to call yourself an actor or writer, etc. To me, when I tell others I am an actor, I am reaffirming with myself that this is my true passion, and my main career path and what I would like to do all the time... I have been a tutor, substitute teacher, caterer, waiter, bartender, building inspector, window washer and now I work in an office where they let me go to auditions and take time off if I book something...but if someone asks me what I do...I say, I'm an ACTOR! It's not always easy if you haven't booked something in a while, but it feels good to be proud of your courageous pursuit.

Thanks for all your comments on "calling yourself an Actor"... would your opinion change if you had no training? or if you took no acting classes? But you still are obsessed with your next acting job, and want to keep going after you fell into your first one. I've had 2 auditions now and got both roles...and want to do more... it's called the "acting bug", I think? Thanks again. Darin

You're excited for your next job, that says it all. And don't let the no training thing hold you back, I don't have any either (well, I did take 3 classes and audit 2 others), and I'm not hurting for projects.

Whether you call yourself an actor or not is up to one person: YOU. Nothing else matters.

To me, you act everyday, your perception is the camera and it's up to you to perform..

All the world's a stage or a 'set'. I like how this has turned into a 'What makes you an actor' lounge discussion..haha. Living in la, I know actors and wack-tors. A wack-tor is just someone who wants to be famous so they got a headshot but they don't do anything else. They dont audition or try to audition, they dont do plays or tv or film or extra work, they dont do monologues in their bedroom, they dont even do scenes with their cat...they actually don't really even like acting...they would just as much like to be on reality tv, as long as it gets them famous. Haha--kinda 'wack.'

Absolutely, I can not think of one "reality" star, that 10-20-30 years from now I would replay their "reality show" and say..wow that was an awesome performance. They can have, if they're lucky, their 20 minutes of fame, but it will never compare to someone dedicated to fulfilling a specific role, and really "wack" it out of the park..

@Ariel, I do not have a lot of advice for screenwriters, because it is not my field. My suggestion to writers that want to turn their script into a movie is to look for producers and film makers on this site that live in your area and may be interested. There seem to be people from all over the world on here!
