Introduce Yourself : Film Producer and Filmmaking Instructor by Mark Stolaroff

Mark Stolaroff

Film Producer and Filmmaking Instructor

Hello Everyone, I'm a film producer and the founder of No Budget Film School, a series of classes I teach that are specifically designed to help you make your micro-budget feature. I've been in this part of the film world for longer than I'd like to admit. After doing a couple of years in Investment Banking in New York and then running my own legitimate theater in Houston for 5 years, I moved out to LA and worked my way up the production track, starting out at Roger Corman's company. I then became a principle at a new company called Next Wave Films, which was financed by the Independent Film Channel and provided finishing funds to exceptional low-budget features. Our claim to fame was discovering filmmakers like Chris Nolan and Joe Carnahan. When NWF closed in 2002, I decided to stay in the micro-budget filmmaking world, as an independent producer and eventually, as an instructor. I created No Budget Film School back in 2005 and I go back and forth between producing and teaching. My current film, "The House That Jack Built," recently won Best Picture, Best Director and Best Screenplay at the Phoenix Film Festival. My previous film "Pig" won 10 awards in all and was released by Kino Lorber in March. I'm working with the "Jack" and "Pig" director on a new film--a higher budget horror/thriller--that we hope to be shooting in the fall. This will be our 5th feature together. I'm getting ready to teach my next No Budget Film School class again in LA this May 3-4. The goal of the class is to properly prepare you to make a film yourself, with the resources you have available to you right now, no matter how limited those resources are. There are a lot of misconceptions that filmmakers make about their films--what's important to their success, what's possible, what's not possible, etc. I put you in the proper mindset and then pass along tips and techniques from years in the trenches of micro-budget filmmaking. Not just lessons I've learned from my movies, but lessons I've gleaned from working with filmmakers like Chris Nolan, David Gordon Greeen, Craig Brewer and many others. I bring guest speakers in who have made successful no-budget films to share their knowledge, too. It's an intensive, entertaining, and inspiring weekend. You probably know that I offer Stage 32 members a 20% discount. RB has been incredibly gracious helping me spread the word and several Stage 32 members have taken the class over the past couple of years. If you'd like to take it, click the link below and be sure to enter the Promo code STAGE32 before purchasing anything; you'll see the prices drop once you apply the code. If you purchase before tomorrow night, you'll save even more--the two day class will cost only $200, and that includes free Movie Magic Screenwriter software, (a $250 value). Ok, enough sounding like a commercial! If you have any questions about the class or no-budget filmmaking in general, feel free to post them.
