Maverick, the first thing to think about is, is this a story that you can do yourself, with your own money, your own equipment, etc? If not, then you need to become a producer. That means you need to find the things or people you don't have and get them to help you. If you've never made a movie before, I recommend starting as small and simple as possible to learn how to tell a story with pictures and sound. You can do this with your iphone camera and a couple of friends. Edit it with free software you can download onto your phone. If you can do this, then step it up to the next level.
Since you're indicating you need an education, I'll recommend these six books I know of, take your pick to start: "What They Don't Teach You at Film School: 161 Strategies for Making your Own Movie No Matter What," by Camille Landau and Tiare White; "Filmmaking Narrative and Structural Techniques," by Bob Foss; "$30 Film School - Write, Finance, Direct, Produce, Shoot, Edit, Distribute, Tour With, and Sell Your Own No-Budget DIGITAL Movie," by Michael W. Dean; "The Power Filmmaking Kit - Make Your Professional Movie on a Next-to-Nothing Budget," by Jason J. Tomaric; "The Guerilla Film Makers Handbook,' by Chris Jones and Genevieve Jolliffe; and "Film Production - The Complete Uncensored Guide to Independent Filmmaking," by Greg Merritt.
get a script or screen play writer
Sorry that's what I meant, all I have is a screen play.
You need the author to authorize writing a script out of the book, Karen. Get it in writing, if the author refuses, then move on. IMHO :)
Mav - you have a script. Did you write it? Are you a producer? Do you intend to direct it? Need a bit more info...
