Copyright: Frenach Law

HI I want to use extracts from a French film made in 1930 for an independant documentary to be produced in France. I understand there are moral laws and now EU laws. The moral stating that the copyright belongs to the next of kin for 100 years etc. Can anyone help me with this process - where to go from here etc. Many thanks

Hi everyone I worked on a short independent film in the summer in Nice. Copyright laws have changed in France and although I cannot remember the exact premise: it amounts to this; if you find the extract of film you want on YouTube then by law and inline with the European Copyright Laws, you can use the piece you want. In our case the film was over a 100 years old and therefore according to French Law, we could use it without seeking permission. I hope I have that right..

Since "Star Wars" would have registered the copyright first in the USA, then that film is still under copyright protection. Dena is referring to a film that is over 100 yrs old. If you found an American film over 100 yrs old, then its copyright has definitely expired. Old copyright laws in the USA protect a text for 95 years.
