"Screamsavers" by Freddy Robinson Document: Beat Sheet/Screenplay Treatment Log Line: A couple of college basketball coaches discover that their families, players, and students are being enslaved for death and destruction by an evil force through a screen saver. 1.PROTAGONIST: RODNEY BANKS, black male, 30’s, assistant basketball coach of mens team. Rodney sets out to investigate strange happenings after a player is murdered by his possessed father. Married to his wife, nurse, Melinda Banks. 2. ANTAGONIST: MR. JENNINGS, white male, 50’s, possessed, kills his son Jimmy, a former basketball player. Mr. Jennings is the “chosen one” for destruction. Page 1 - OPENING IMAGE - Rodney and his wife Melinda have head coach Steve over for dinner, along with their star recruit/player and his father, MR. JENNINGS and his son Jimmy. Page 5 - THEME STATED - During dinner, Mr. Jennings states that “only the strong survive in this world.” Pages 1-10: Rodney, Steve, their families, and The Jennings’ are established during the first ten pages, allowing us to get a feel for what’s supposed to be a four year relationship. However, we see Mr. Jennings’ strange behavior happen after he buys his son a laptop for school as a going off to college surprise. Something takes over Mr. Jennings when he turns on the new laptop. We fade out, then fade into Black, SUPERIMPOSED: MONTHS LATER. Page 12 - CATALYST. After their third loss in a row at the start of the season, Rodney and Steve are rocked with disturbing news that Mr. Jennings killed his son Jimmy. Page 12-25 - DEBATE - After hearing the news, Rodney’s confirmation of Jimmy’s strange behavior during a game is confirmed, along with his wife’s dark and uncharacteristic behavior. With too many unanswered questions, Rodney decides to snoop around and investigate, and visit to Mr. Jennings in jail. Page 25 - ACT 2 BEGINS - Mr. Jennings says some disturbing things to Rodney, unknowingly giving Rodney a clue when he states that “only the strong survive, and we should all stare death in the eyes and embrace a new way of life.” Upon hearing this, Rodney worries even more about his wife, and asks the other players, Jimmy’s professors, and dorm residents questions about Jimmy. Rodney is determined to find the answers, yet must tread softly. Page 30 - The subplot kicks in as Rodney convinces Steve to ride with him to Jimmy’s neighborhood, just to ask around. Steve warns Rodney that they’re “coaches and not cops, to let the law of the land prevail.” Rodney and Steve break into the Jennings house one night, discovering “the eyes” on Mr. Jennings old desktop computer. They encounter strange and possessed neighbors as they leave the old rundown neighborhood. Page 30 - 55 - FUN AND GAMES(First half insists that something strange is going he wants him to come over and look at “The eyes” pop up when Steve turns on Rodney destroys it. Page 55 - BAD GUYS CLOSE IN - The neighbors in Mr. Jennings neighborhood hold a late night meeting regarding what to do about Rodney. Page 60 - FALSE VICTORY - Rodney’s wife starts acting normal again after destroying his wife’s laptop, realizing that Mr. Jennings and Jimmy’s computers must also be destroyed, before the evil spreads. Page 75 - ALL IS LOST - Dean Anita calls Rodney into her office and fires him for intervening in the Jennings investigation. Pages 75-85 - THE DARK NIGHT OF THE SOUL - Rodney reflects on the strange happenings with his wife, who now tells him that her coworkers have also been acting strange. Page 85 - ACT 3 - Melinda gets called into work one night to work 3rd shift, from 11pm to 7am, but doesn’t come home. Since Melinda hasn’t been missing for 24 hours, Rodney is on his own in finding her, unless Steve helps him. Little does Rodney know, yet soon discovers, is that Steve is “the one,” the head recruit for a new way of life founded upon strength principles of evil. The only way for Rodney to upload a virus into the only network the city uses, then kill all the power in order to break the evil spell cast over many citizens, including Steve. Page 110 - Order is restored, Steve and Rodney return back to being coaches. Mr. Jennings is still faces murder charges; unchanged.
