About Alyx

Alyx is a filmmaker and choreographer in genres spanning live performance, installation, video-dance, music video, documentary, television commercials, and experimental filmmaking. Her films investigate human perception in relation to place, culture and emotional context. She is currently releasing her first feature film THE RED HOUSE in NZ cinemas nationwide. Alyx holds a Masters of Theatre Arts (Directing) with Distinction from Victoria University and Toi Whakaari and a Bachelor of Performing Arts (Contemporary Dance) from Unitec, New Zealand. Alongside her industry work she has taught papers in dance, digital video, and theatre studies at various tertiary institutions in New Zealand and China.
Previous work includes feature film THE RED HOUSE (NZIFF, Green Competition), short films APPETITE (NZIFF 2010, Brussels Independent Film Festival), PANDORA (NZIFF, In the Realm of the Senses, Cinedans Amstedam, Reel Dance), and award winning music videos Minuit’s Fuji (Best Video Finalist NZ Music Awards, Best Editing & Cinematography Kodak Music Video Awards).

Alyx’s directing focus is developing strong narrative features that are both personal and far-reaching, and documentaries with a playful, perceptive and intimate approach to the subject. She is currently working on a documentary RETURN TO THE PLANET MONGO, which, like THE RED HOUSE, is produced between China and New Zealand. She also has a short dance film THE TIDE KEEPER in post-production. She is in the early writing stage of her next feature THE MOON BABY’S DAUGHTER.
