Marcus is a simple man who works in a slaughterhouse. He's used to blood, familiar with killing. Now he's graduated to humans. His tools are the same for both: a captive bolt pistol to stun, and a sharp knife to finish. Investigating the gruesome crimes is Detective Feuillet. Once lost to a nasty addiction while working undercover, now daily doses of Methadone keep him clean. To get into the mind of the killer, he soon finds himself sneaking back into the crime scenes after hours… and shooting up. Marcus never speaks. Not a word. He lives with blind Mrs Birden, her eyes thick with greyish-white cataracts. She's a force of southern-sky nature, cumulus soft, lightning hard. She exerts an unnatural control over young Marcus. When she wants prime cuts of the “long pig” for her famous Creole BBQ, he gets it for her. Among those that practice cannibalism, “long pig” is code for human flesh. She is in fact the reason Marcus kills. Never a police suspect, Mrs. Birden's complicity in the killings is slowly revealed. Even as Detective Feuillet closes in on Marcus, the question becomes not whether he will catch the killer, but will he overcome his own demons. Or will they take him too far, shattering his family and destroying his career. Mrs Birden's control over Marcus is upended when love enters his life. Audrey is a full-figured girl who would be the perfect victim, but her sweetness saves her. And it promises to save Marcus, too. However, if Audrey finds out that Marcus is a killer, it could destroy everything. And like everything in this dark world, innocent Audrey has her own secrets. The intersection of these stories culminates in a shocking ending that is as disturbing as it is satisfying.
