The story centers around a childless couple, a doctor and his wife. After losing their son in the war, she yearns for another to fill the void. He desperately seeks out word from home that the war is over and they are free to return. However, their home is another planet, and Earth is their prison. Indistinguishable from the others in town, the couple are watched over by a warden, a former ally - who once vowed to protect them, but has since become a tyrant. They form a forbidden friendship with their new human neighbors, a pregnant couple, and soon their identity is accidentally discovered. As punishment, the wife is to be sent back home, which surely means death. Now the husband must do what he can to save her, or die trying.
