WHO AM I?
By J.R Meek

GENRE: Drama
LOGLINE:

After a failed suicide attempt, a depressed young man retraces the places and people from his childhood in hopes of uncovering the forgotten moments that led him to despair and finding a reason to live before he destroys himself a second time.

SYNOPSIS:

Danny drifts through a monotonous life, numbing himself with routine while quietly battling suicidal thoughts. His days blur together: filing job applications, enduring a degrading job, returning home to isolation, and repeating the same hollow cycle. One afternoon, after another crushing day, Danny snaps. While driving along a cliffside road, he unbuckles his seatbelt, accelerates, and sends his car over the edge.

But Danny survives.

He wakes up in a hospital, confused and frustrated that his attempt failed. His parents arrive, overwhelmed with relief, bringing him a few personal belongings from home, including an old childhood journal he used to write in. As Danny reads it, he feels like he is looking through the eyes of a different person. The hopeful boy in those pages feels completely foreign to the man he has become, and Danny realizes he can barely remember the path that led him here.

After leaving the hospital, Danny quits his job and begins retracing the moments described in his journal. Traveling back to places and people from his past, he attempts to reconstruct the emotional chain that shaped him. Each memory forces him to confront painful experiences he buried long ago, while the temptation to attempt suicide again continues to follow him.

During this journey, Danny rediscovers something he once loved: theatre. Remembering how he studied creative arts in college, he impulsively auditions for a small role in a local stage production, assuming he has no chance of being cast. To his surprise, he gets the part.

Through rehearsals, Danny meets his energetic co-star, Naomi. She gradually pulls him into the social life of the theatre troupe. Late-night outings, rehearsals filled with laughter, and small adventures that begin to chip away at Danny’s isolation. Over time, their friendship deepens into romantic feelings.

But Danny’s long-standing habit of self-sabotage resurfaces. Convinced he will eventually ruin everything, he abruptly pushes Naomi away and cuts off their relationship. Spiraling once again, he drives to a remote mountain with a pistol, preparing for another attempt on his life.

In that moment of isolation, Danny confronts a difficult realization: the pattern that led him here. His fear, his self-sabotage, his withdrawal has all followed him his entire life. If his life is to change, the decision must come from him. Instead of pulling the trigger, Danny chooses to live.

With encouragement from the theatre cast and director, Danny finds the courage to face Naomi again. In a vulnerable conversation, he admits the depth of his struggles and promises to seek help and be honest about his episodes rather than hiding them. Naomi agrees to support him if he promises to inform her when he’s going through an episode.

Opening night arrives, and the play is a resounding success. After the performance, the cast celebrates together. Later, before leaving for rehearsal the next day, Danny pauses in his home and looks at the pistol that once represented his escape. This time, there are no intrusive thoughts, no imagined endings, just silence.

Danny turns away, closes the door behind him, and leaves the gun behind.

Good logline! One specific detail about the character or his past would make it outstanding. Good luck finding the right producer for it!

Natalie Diorio David Veal Maurice Vaughan Jane Tumminello Marcos Fizzotti Phil Leasure Lauren Hackney Michael Dzurak Krystyna Artyuh Robyn Henderson Thank you all for taking the time to read and rate my logline. This is different than other scripts I have written. I mainly enjoy writing fantasy, particularly medieval fantasy screenplays. However, this story I felt didn't need a fantasy or Sci-Fi setting. I felt having a Drama story is more appropriate for what I am wanting to write. It will also be my first foray into writing a feature. I have only written pilots until now.

It is mainly a fictional story using my real-life experiences with going through depression. I'm not sure this story will have a chance to be brought to life outside the page, but I'm willing to try.

J.R Meek

Natalie Diorio It is a heavy-subject story. I needed to put Content Warning on the title page because this will definitely trigger people who will not expect it. I know there are still many people out there still having internal battles with mental health. It is a very difficult subject to talk about, but it is relevant as many people are still trying to figure out there own struggles, their own identities. Also, thank you for the encouragement!

J.R Meek

Krystyna Artyuh Thank you! I'll think about a specific detail on him or his past. I'm hopeful to find the right producer.

This is an inspiring synopsis J.R Meek. Might you share the style of actors you envisage playing Danny? Personally I love to visualise the actor who will play the part. Might that help a producer as well? Just a thought.

@Robyn Henderson Thank you! I usually don't think of actors or actresses for my scripts. I try to get into the mindset of my characters. I think in this instance of style of actors, two actors I can think of on the top of my mind is maybe Miles Caton (Sinners) or Tyriq Withers. It could help in finding a producer, I won't say no to ideas or suggestions!
