About David

I'm David Schurmann, and storytelling has always been at the heart of my craft. From fiction to documentaries, I strive to create narratives that resonate deeply with audiences around the world.

My cinematic fiction journey began with "Little Secret," a deeply personal project based on the true story of my adopted sister, Katherine. Representing Brazil at the 2017 Oscars, this film was a testament to my passion for crafting poignant tales that leave a lasting impact.

More recently, I directed the heartwarming family film "My Penguin Friend," featuring the incredible talents of Jean Reno and Adriana Barraza. This true story about the bond between a fisherman and an extraordinary penguin showcases my dedication to capturing the essence of human connections and evoking genuine emotions on screen.

Venturing back into drama, I directed "Por Um Fio" (By a Wire), which tells the gripping story of renowned oncologist Dr. Drauzio Varella's struggle to save his brother. With performances by Bruno Gagliasso and Rômulo Estrela, this film highlights my versatility and ability to engage audiences across various genres.

My work extends beyond the big screen. I've directed TV series for National Geographic, including the 11-part "Expedition to the Orient," and the 36-part "Magellan Global Adventure" for Globo TV. One of my proudest achievements is the documentary feature "The World Twice Around," which received awards at festivals in Recife, Buenos Aires, Milan, Rome, and New York.

Outside of filmmaking, I'm passionate about environmental issues. I lead the initiative "Voice of the Oceans," raising awareness about critical ocean-related concerns and demonstrating my commitment to positive change.

My cinematic journey began at 13, capturing my family's first sailing expedition around the world. This early passion led me to film school in New Zealand and further education in the United States.

I am known for my diverse narratives, poignant storytelling, and strong social conscience, I aim to consistently captivate global audiences with my cinematic vision.
