About Jaap

Jaap (1984) is an award winning visual storyteller. He uses film, Virtual Reality and photography as his go-to tools. He has been working internationally as a freelance documentary photographer and camera operator since 2007 and a cinematographer since 2010. As his career progressed, he started to direct (and write) more and more, which has now become his main focus.

With experience in shooting long term (research) based documentary photography projects, documentaries (film), music videos, commercials, web based interactive content and narrative fiction for clients that include the BBC, Nike, BMW and numerous NGO's, his work has taken him to over sixty countries and counting.

In his work, Jaap is constantly searching for projects that move him. Stories that have a powerful visual identity in combination with enthralling human elements and a hyperdiegetic way of storytelling, often set in the more challenging environments our planet has to offer.

Jaap is also a member of the Directors Guild of the Netherlands (DDG).

  • Doorgaan / To Pursue

    Doorgaan / To Pursue (2019 - 2020)
Documentary by JONNA / Johanneke Dijkstra (Documentary) Cinematographer DOORGAAN (Dutch for 'to pursue') is a poignant, intense documentary about strength and survival. What do you do when life knocks you out? Will you stay down? Or do you get up? And do you run away or do you hit back? In the documentary you can see the special relationship between Piet and Farshid. Piet Rozendaal grew up in the Boterhoek of Leeuwarden; the red light district of poverty. The Prinsentuin was the first boxing ring where he fought. Neighborhood against neighbourhood. You were both each other's enemy and each other's friend, a value that Piet later found in boxing. During the filming of the documentary, Farshid Bos becomes Dutch Champion in his class, not without a struggle.
