SYNOPSIS:
It's 1994. A twelve-year-old girl named Candy travels alone on the London Underground, eating sweets. An old man sits next to her and tells her stories of when he joined the army back in the fifties, when he was not much older than herself. She listens, intrigued. When the man leaves the train, she puts on headphones and listens to a pop song. On returning home, we see her room, filled with clutter. She lies on her bed and reads a book. It's 1999. Candy is now in her teens, dressed in rock-style clothing. She is travelling on the same route on the Underground and reading a book by Kafka. The old man boards the train. Again he tells her a story in graphic detail about when he was at war in Malaya. When she returns home this time, she now has a computer on her desk amongst the clutter and she immediately starts tapping away at the keyboard. It's 2014. Candy is an office worker now. Once again she is on the Underground. We hear an announcement reminding passengers to report suspicious behaviour. Around her are other office workers, all using mobile phones and various electronic devices in silence. Candy zones out, remember her chats with the old man and imagines herself in the situations that he told her about. When she gets home, she tosses a frozen meal into the microwave, grumbling about how long it takes to cook. Once it is cooked, she eats it in front of the computer. It's 2045. Candy is now much older. She boards the Underground train, which is plastered in posters warning passengers about security and terrorism. The other passengers around her are all dressed in grey, expressionless. Candy sits next to a young boy and attempts to make conversation. The boy is alarmed and threatens to report her, so she stays quiet. The old man, who should be long dead by now, boards the train. He is dressed in white. He tells her that she is going the wrong way, which she denies. He insists and tells her that in order for any of them to get anywhere, they have to go back. Candy smiles and tells him she already knows this; she takes out the same headphones that she had when she was a young girl and places them on her head, listening to the same song that she was listening to in the beginning.
