There Patrice succumbs to the charms of Roland, a South African ex-pat of questionable means. Shortly afterwards, Roland is kidnapped by Gen. Borrego, a paramilitary drug lord whom he swindled $10 million out of in a bogus real estate deal. With the Bermudian P.D. on the general’s payroll, Patrice snoops around a bar for leads as to Roland’s whereabouts. When Patrice winds up in a knife fight Dee Dee, a cohort of Roland’s, saves Patrice’s bacon. Trading stories about Roland, Patrice learns that Roland is a con man who scammed Gen. Borrego out of narco dollars he was trying to launder. Suspicious, Patrice breaks into Roland’s cottage and finds letters from charity organizations thanking him for his generous contributions. Understanding that Roland is a modern-day Robin Hood, Patrice only becomes more determined to locate him. Patrice meets Gen. Borrego on his yacht. She proposes hacking into the Royal Bank of Bermuda and wiring $10 million into the general’s offshore account - this in exchange for Roland’s freedom. The general green lights the deal but bumps up the ransom to $50 million. The high stakes transaction goes south when Gen. Borrego double-crosses Patrice and kills Dee Dee who was acting as a go-between. Assuming Roland is fish food, Patrice is shocked when he tracks her down after escaping from the general’s yacht. Realizing she can’t live Roland’s life of thievery, Patrice agrees to sail to the Bahamas where they will go their separate ways. Riding out a hurricane in a rust bucket with a boozing captain at the helm, Patrice and Roland narrowly arrive at the Bahamas. Dodging a watery grave, Roland pledges to Patrice that he will give up the con game if she will return with him to his home in South Africa. When Patrice and Roland show up at his family’s ranch, they are greeted by Otto, Roland’s very racist uncle. Roland discovers his father on his deathbed and makes up with him despite their differences on racial issues. After Roland’s father dies, Otto throws Roland and his “half-breed” girlfriend off the ranch. At his father’s funeral, Roland is slipped a note by an African worker who pleads with him to come to the family steel mill. Next day, Patrice and Roland visit the mill and witness the hellish conditions the steelworkers must endure. Despite his family’s objections, Roland marries Patrice. Gen. Borrego hunts them down on their honeymoon and demands his ten million from Roland whom he discovered comes from a wealthy family. A fight ensues leaving Borrego dead and Roland in I.C.U. Emerging from a coma, Roland learns his father willed to him fifty percent of the family steel mill. Armed with Roland’s power-of-attorney, Patrice improves the working conditions of the employees. When Otto threatens legal action, Patrice responds with company ledgers showing embezzlement while Roland’s father was dying. When Roland is released from the hospital, Patrice takes him to the renovated mill where the workers lift them up on their shoulders in a shared triumph.
