LAST PICK ON THE PLANET
By Charles Fischman

GENRE: Family
LOGLINE: Two middle-school girls, reluctant partners on a science project, forge a new friendship as they battle a fast-food franchise to protect the environment of their coastal Maine town.

SYNOPSIS:

When an A- student with B+ social standing at Mastport Middle School is assigned to be science project partners with the class tom-boy, a girl more interested in lacrosse stick work than doing homework, the good student figures she is doomed to a terrible project and a bad grade. To make matters worse, the unlikely duo's topic is “Trash.” Barely able to talk without arguing, the girls settle into an uneasy partnership when they discover a serious environmental problem in Mastport, Styrofoam litter from the local fast-food burger restaurant. At the project presentation, the franchise owner angrily dismisses the girls’ findings. Later, he blocks their attempt to pass a town law banning Styrofoam. At that point, the girls must choose between being content with their A+ grade and going their separate ways, or taking action together to protect Mastport’s environment. With the help of their science teacher and their classmates, the two new friends decide to organize a parade on Mother’s Day to try to convince the Town Council to pass the law. Last Pick on the Planet is inspired the true story of the efforts of a group of students in Freeport, Maine to pass a town ordinance that bans the use of polystyrene food containers. The “Styrofoam Ordinance,” Chapter 33 of the Freeport Town Code, remains a law to this day.
