By Karen Albright Lin

GENRE: Thriller, Horror
LOGLINE:

An American underwater archaeologist unearths an intact artifact from 300BC, releasing an ancient water god and the vengeance of the Yangtze River.

SYNOPSIS:

An underwater archaeologist, Kevin Hunter, works to preserve prized artifacts for the anxiously awaited and world-wide lauded underwater museum alongside the Three Gorges Dam. Uncovering an artifact from 300 BC, he inadvertently releases an ancient water god and the vengeance of the river. As the Yangtze grows more threatening, Kevin finds himself thwarting gun-toting looters while exposing a German maintenance foreman hiding ancient treasures to put on the lucrative world market. The Yangtze turns deadly, beginning with the suspicious death of Kevin’s young local assistant, turning the villagers against Kevin. He flees to a nearby island locals believe is inhabited by spirits of the dead, where long suppressed guilt over his own son’s accidental death resurfaces.

Shao Hwei, a Chinese/German doctor overseeing the health of the surrounding community, admires Kevin’s work on behalf of the Yangtze’s history and environment. She braves the haunted island to help him in his battles. It turns out her father is the German foreman of dam maintenance caught with stolen artifacts. But vengeance belongs to the River when the foreman’s barge is slammed repeatedly into the dam, breaching it and killing all on board.

After unraveling the connection between the Yangtze’s fury and his archaeological find, Kevin destroys the priceless relic. The Yangtze’s waters calm. Satisfied, the River God returns the village children it had claimed. Kevin’s efforts to save the sacrificed children and pieces of China’s previously elusive past have redeemed him and allow him to finally forgive himself of his own son’s death. He’s ready to pursue a relationship with Shao Hwei. (written with Janet Fogg) **** A BlueCat evaluator stated No One Asked the River “provides a strong hook. The image of the dead baby floating down the river, being brushed off by various boats is strong, an image that would get a rise out of an audience…” A Page Awards judge stated: “This is a really cool basis for a fascinating environmental horror film. The idea that the earth itself is rebelling against the aggressive actions of mankind is a powerful one…Your opening scene is easily one of the creepiest I have ever read, truly chilling while being strangely majestic.”
