CIVIL SERVANTS
By Wanda Weaver (formerly Kight)

GENRE: Mystery
LOGLINE:

The first black, female sheriff, elected to transform a rogue department, struggles to find her footing and acceptance in a hostile, politically charged county government.

SYNOPSIS:

I worked in county government for ten years in Atlanta and experienced the drama of political backstabbing, scandals and the difficulty of running a county government while trying to protect its citizens.

Jacqueline Weathers has just narrowly been elected sheriff and inherits a dysfunctional and possibly corrupt department. She is faced with the recent, on the job murder of one of her deputy sheriffs and a politically charged county board that wants to control her actions. Recently divorced and a recovered alcoholic, she now is challenged with raising her precocious 14 year old daughter alone.

As she fires and hires new employees, she becomes acutely aware of the fact that someone doesn't want her in this new position and is out to get her; she has a harrowing car incident and a suspicious break-in. As she struggles to adjust to the demands of her new job, there is a prison break but she courageously rises to the challenge. But, it takes a toll on her. She's tempted to drink again and haunted by her father's mysterious death as a police officer.

Each week there's a new challenge and back stories about three other characters (Medical Examiner, a social worker in DFCS and a Director of Planning) and the stress and strain of running a county government while trying to protect its citizens.
