SYNOPSIS:

JANE ASHLEY FONTAINE, an attractive, highly successful mystery novelist, newly divorced and nursing her broken heart with alcohol, has purchased a new home in the small mountain community of Prescott through the local Realtor, Leslie Pyle. LESLIE, eager to make the sale, has neglected to tell JANE the full history of the house, a history that holds several secrets concerning murder and deceit. LESLIE nervously hands over the keys to the house to JANE and leaves a nice welcome basket of fruit, wine, cheese and some local shopping coupons before returning to her office. JANE begins to settle in, coming to terms with her broken heart and dumps an entire bottle of brandy down the kitchen sink. JANE slowly puts her house in order and notices strange noises coming from the attic. JANE investigates and discovers an open window as the source of the problem. Or so she thinks. Returning to her kitchen JANE discovers the welcome basket mysteriously moved onto the floor in the basement doorway. Over the course of the next few days other strange events occur. JANE’S office becomes extremely cold for no apparent reason, lit candles begin blowing out by themselves, and when JANE attempts to build a garden spot in her backyard she accidentally hits a water pipe and when the plumber, TODD, arrives, he discovers a pair of man’s prescription glasses lying in the mud. JANE decides to have a small glass of wine with some pizza one evening as she begins work on her next novel. Suddenly JANE sees a little girl moving down her hallway and JANE follows her to the basement door. JANE calls to the little girl to come upstairs but she is ignored. When JANE threatens to call the local police, JANE turns around and sees the little girl, MEGAN, standing on the kitchen table bleeding from her head. JANE tells MEGAN to stay put and JANE runs to the house phone to call the police and the paramedics. When JANE comes back to the kitchen the little girl is gone. JANE calls down to the basement and the little girl responds by saying, “I want my mommy.” JANE assures MEGAN she will help her find her mommy if she will come back up the stairs. JANE peers down the steps only to hear MEGAN’S voice from behind her a second time and when JANE turns again, she is so startled by MEGAN’S prescence she backs up and JANE falls down the basement steps and is knocked unconscious. JANE awakens being attended to by two paramedics, SHARON and ERIC and the local police chief, OFFICER DAMATO. The paramedics leave and JANE asks OFFICER DAMATO about the little girl. OFFICER DAMATO tells JANE there was no little girl found and believes that JANE may have been hallucinating due to drugs or alcohol. A disgruntled JANE bids a cold goodnight to OFFICER DAMATO but before he leaves he tells JANE that a little girl like she described was murdered in the house over twenty years ago and the man that did it was in prison for life. The next morning JANE is visited by her agent, a quirky shrewd businesswoman named HENRIETTA, who is eager to see if JANE has started the new book or not. JANE tells HENRIETTA about the little girl and HENRIETTA tries to get JANE to leave with her and go back to the hotel where HENRIETTA is with another client, EZRA SLOAN, a lover of HENRIETTA’S and a world renown forensic photographer. JANE tells HENRIETTA her books talk to her and whatever it is that is happening in the house is also speaking to her and she has decided to stay, investigate, and possibly make her investigation the source of her next book. HENRIETTA reluctantly accepts JANE’S decision, tells JANE she knows a medium she can contact and leaves. JANE goes to the local library and discovers the history of the house and confronts LESLIE with the newly discovered information. LESLIE begs forgiveness and swears to JANE that she knew nothing about any murder-taking place there. JANE goes to OFFICER DAMATO and asks him to reopen MEGAN’S case but he refuses to do so. JANE leaves. The following day TODD the plumber tells JANE he saw a man in the upstairs window. JANE investigates, finds nothing, and goes to sleep. That night the ghost of MEGAN and another ghost, THEO, come down from the attic together and watch JANE sleep. Guilt ridden LESLIE feels the world is falling down on her now that JANE is investigating into Megan’s death. A flashback reveals how GRACE, killed THEO when LESLIE was a child and how LESLIE never said a word about it to anyone. JANE, HENRIETTA, and EZRA sit down at JANE’S house with an elderly medium, CLAIRE, and hold a séance. A foul smell permeates the room as a spirit overtakes CLAIRE’S body and warns everyone to leave the house or “she will come for you.” CLAIRE passes out and when she comes to the ghost of MEGAN reappears and quickly leaves leaving CLAIRE frightened and JANE more convinced to investigate further. EZRA and HENRIETTA agree to assist. EZRA and HENRIETTA go to Los Angeles to try and retrieve MEGAN’S case file from a friend of EZRA’S. JANE flies to San Quentin to meet the man convicted of MEGAN’S murder, VINCENT DUPRE, the ex-lover of GRACE TERRELL and father of little MEGAN. JANE tells VINCENT that she believes him to be innocent and VINCENT thinks she is crazy. VINCENT says he was drunk the night MEGAN was killed but believes in his heart that he was the one responsible. JANE asks VINCENT if he can remember anything not brought up at the trial on the night MEGAN died. VINCENT remembers the Spanish words “Me la vasa pagar” but doesn’t know what it means or why it’s in his head. JANE discovers that LESLIE is MEGAN’S mother and it was LESLIE and GRACE’S testimony that placed VINCENT in prison. Armed with those words JANE returns to Prescott. JANE goes to LESLIE’S office but it is locked. OFFICER DAMATO’S deputy, PHIL, happens by and they both go in the back door of the office only to find LESLIE dead from suicide by hanging. At LESLIE’S funeral JANE can sense the anger of the PEOPLE of the small town for her meddling into an old case that now brings front-page tragic news to the forefront of a town that survives on visitors coming during the summer months for family fun. JANE’S investigation leads her and EZRA and HENRIETTA to the basement and the back yard of the house where the body of THEO and the lost cat, Snowball are found. JANE is now convinced that GRACE TERRELL was responsible for both THEO and MEGAN’S death OFFICER DAMATO brings in a forensic TEAM and places JANE at the local hotel. At the hotel JANE overhears a cleaning woman say “Me la vasa pagar ” and convinces herself she has finally found GRACE TERRELL. JANE calls in OFFICER DAMATO only to discover the woman is his drunken cousin, CHARLOTTE. JANE returns home and has a woman from Hannah Stone’s cleaning service come in to straighten up. EZRA and HARRIET and OFFICER DAMATO go to Hannah’s workplace to follow a new lead and realize Hannah Stone is actually GRACE TERRELL. OFFICER DAMATO races to JANE’S rescue. GRACE tries to kill JANE and OFFICER DAMATO but is confronted by MEGAN and THEO and falls over the railing and is killed. JANE and a wounded OFFICER DAMATO step outside just as HENRIETTA, EZRA and the deputy, PHIL arrives. Justice prevails for MEGAN and THEO and JANE gets closure on what truly occurred the nights MEGAN and THEO both died.
