SYNOPSIS:

THE AFTERPARTY - Synopsis, WGA Reg# 1623840 After a light but foolhardy wisecrack in a crisis meeting at her boutique wedding planning business in NYC, Kelly is deemed to be 'unmotivated' and is fired in an economy-related staff reduction. Her brother Marc, who is crashing with her as he reconstructs his life and psyche after a nasty divorce, jokingly suggests that she start a 'divorce planning' business since the divorce rate is 50%+ and climbing. Angered by his insensitivity she calls her best friend Jen, an unsuccessful agent in California, to discuss life and complain about her brother. Jen decides to come visit her in NYC and the genesis of Kelly's new business evolves during a night of drinking. Marc, a previously successful stockbroker who has been loafing as a video game store manager and fulltime pothead while living on Kelly's couch for the 2 years since his divorce, straightens out enough to call in a few favors and incorporate the business. In the meantime, a New York 'society girl' (one of Kelly's former wedding clients) decides to divorce her philandering husband, becoming their first ‘divorce party’ client. The event is a success and given to the exclusive client and guest list, receives great press and the business takes off. As the business grows, college flame Kristian (now a senior executive) is in town on business and sees Kelly, Mark and Jen on late night TV. He rearranges his schedule to meet Kelly but she rejects him. In an effort to win her back, he explains to Marc that he has always remained in love with Kelly. He, Marc and Jen conspire to plan a party for a wealthy 'mystery client' (Kristian), surprising Kelly and eventually rekindling their relationship. Situational tension abounds - between Kelly & Marc (as sibling/roommates), between Jen/Marc/Kelly (Jen’s long-term crush on Marc grates on Kelly) and between kids and parents (awkward situations and conversations as the trio meet and deal with Kelly & Marc’s divorced parents and respective significant others). The film culminates with Marc/Jen in a happy relationship and Kelly/Kristian re-growing their relationship. Final scene is a humorous extension of an earlier uncomfortable dinner at the mother’s house with her odd new husband as Kelly introduces Kristian to her Mom for the first time.
