SYNOPSIS:

“Axolotloctopus” is a sci-fi/thriller that’s like “The Island of Dr. Moreau” meets “The Visit”. When Matthew, a paralyzed military vet, kills himself it devastates his mother, Jessica, a genetic researcher, and leaves his wife, Fawn, to raise their five year old son, Kenny, alone. Jessica throws herself into her work. She and her assistant, Naomi, study the regenerative properties of octopus and axolotls, determined to find a way to combine their DNA with ours to create a new breed of human; one capable of regenerating limbs, organs, even spinal cords. Their research leads them to conduct unspeakable experiments on homeless men. Kenny grew up feeling like something was missing. Fawn was great, and he loves Zyad, his stepfather, but he’s always wanted a connection to his late father, yet, try as he may, Jessica always remained distant. Over time they stopped speaking entirely. Now that Kenny’s fiancée, Soledad, is four months pregnant, Kenny decides it’s the perfect time for a reunion. He convinces Soledad, Fawn, and Zyad, to pay Jessica a surprise visit. Meanwhile, Jessica’s experiments are failing, with her subjects devolving into hideously deformed hybrid creatures. The serum itself is perfect, what they need is a more organic delivery method, and, much to her delight, Jessica realizes Soledad’s body’s the perfect vessel, and her unborn child the ultimate subject. While Naomi’s hesitant, she agrees to go along. She punctures two of Zyad’s tires, forcing them to spend the night in Jessica’s remote home. Hoping to save Soledad’s unborn baby, Naomi “milks” one of the creatures, and injects the venom into Zyad. Unfortunately, the results are the same. With the phones out, cell service down, and no car, they can only helplessly watch as Zyad devolves into a human/octopus creature. Seeing the results, Jessica locks Kenny and Fawn in the room with the creature, then she and Naomi drag Soledad to the basement lab. Kenny and Fawn fight off the creature, then escape outside, where Kenny manages to kill it with a bag of rock salt. He races inside to save Soledad, unaware Fawn’s been wounded. Realizing she’s starting to change, Fawn kills herself. Naomi, who’s still mourning the death of her child, tries to free Soledad, but Jessica discovers her betrayal, and kills her. Kenny comes to save Soledad, but he’s too late. Jessica’s already given Soledad the serum, and she’s now seven months pregnant. By morning she’s nine months pregnant, and goes into labor. Giving birth to a perfect baby girl, Gabriella, whose chubby little arm morphs into a long tentacle, that strangles Jessica to death. Kenny decides he has no choice but to kill Gabriella, only Soledad can’t let him. She knocks Kenny out, then drags him outside. When she returns, Gabriella’s feeding on Jessica’s eviscerated corpse. Soledad, still determined to save her child, ties up Kenny, sets Jessica’s house on fire, then she and Gabriella take off, in one of the victim’s cars. By late morning, Gabriella’s already an adolescent, and ravenously hungry. Soledad sees a man broken-down on the side of the road, and pulls over so Gabriella can feed. Seeing Gabriella tear the screaming man apart is too much. Soledad tries to kill Gabriella, but can’t bring herself to do it. Instead, Gabriella attacks her, but, just before she can kill Soledad, Jessica’s SUV comes speeding down the highway, slams into Gabriella, and sends her flying. Her shattered body crashes to the ground, where she bashes her head on a rock, killing her. Kenny leaps out of the SUV, and races to embrace a shaken but unharmed Soledad. Fearing no one will believe what really happened, they bury Gabriella’s body in a field, and concoct a story to conceal the truth. As the sun begins to set, the ground over Gabriella’s makeshift grave begins to vibrate. A tentacle shoves it’s way out of the dirt as Gabriella claws her way out.
