WHEN GOD THROWS A CURVE
By Frank Vespe

GENRE: Family
LOGLINE:

A Minor League pitcher turned priest gets a second chance to return to the game and the woman he loves; before the mob whacks him first.

SYNOPSIS:

Paul Michaels was a stand-out pitcher in the Yankee Triple A farm system, but when his high-school sweetheart and fiance Suzanne stands him up at the altar, the pitching mound at Yankee Stadium, his life takes a nose dive; depression, drugs, drink and a planned swan-dive off the George Washington Bridge, but a chance encounter with a late night TV minster turns his life around and the priesthood soon follows. Fast forward ten years: Paul is chaplain at a Long Island hospital and called to the bedside for last rites of a comatose highway police officer rammed by a drunk driver on the Long Island Expressway...the officer's wife is Suzanne, his fiance ten years earlier. A rekindling of sorts occurs, her husband passes away and they stay in touch. Paul's brother Anthony, who disowned Paul for abandoning baseball, calls unexpectedly and offers season tickets to the NY Mets final season at Shea; Paul jumps at the chance to see his brother after ten years and get inches away from the game he loves. Sitting in front of Paul is Chicky Rose, a seasoned mob-connected associate who Paul strikes up a friendship with but soon sees him slipping small white cocaine-type packets to the players that visit before each game. A priest, a mobster, a former lover, a mystery brother and a game called baseball all are in fair territory When God Throws a Curve.
