THE CLOUD FACTORY
By Ange Neale

GENRE: Drama, Historical, Romance, War, Other
LOGLINE:

On her quest to fly fighters and bombers, a young ferry pilot confronts the horrors of WWII and finds love with an ascetic Royal Air Force surgeon.

This 'Atonement' meets 'Carol' WWII romantic drama flips the genre on its head with LGBT protagonists.

SYNOPSIS:

JEN MORGAN (18, American, tall and athletic, bright, with a goofy streak) works as a civilian ferry pilot in Britain in 1940. During the Dunkirk evacuations, Jen meets and is immediately attracted to ALLI PARKER (25, British, a petite, ascetic workaholic), a Royal Air Force surgeon and discreet lesbian.

But Jen hasn't confronted the issue of her sexuality, and Alli has grave reservations about Jen's youth. It takes the horrendous all-night raid by hundreds of Nazi bombers upon the English city of Coventry in November, 1940, to force Jen to finally to accept that there are things more important than flying faster and higher, like self-acceptance and love. So begins an epic romance between the two.

It strikes a serious obstacle when a vindictive colleague of Alli's, GODFREY WINTERBOTTOM (35, the ward's adulterous, serial sexual harasser) outs their relationship to a tabloid newspaper, engulfing the hospital in scandal and resulting in Alli having to accept a Middle East posting to save her RAF career.

This is a story set in Britain between 1940 and 1941. It explores themes like coming of age / coming out, love conquering all, the triumph of the underdog, chauvinism, envy, and military sexual harassment.

Quoting a Black List reader: "Hollywood loves a good love story and this script has it in spades. The script is also quite timely, reflecting the current climate regarding women's rights, and the LGBTQ community. Strong stories with even stronger female leads is something that is still quite lacking and investors (especially female) are desperate to find material. It is an easy argument to make that LGBTQ films are niche, but this doesn't fall into that category. It has action, suspense, drama, and a solid love story."
