TRUNK OF AN ELEPHANT
By Stephanie Bianca

GENRE: War, Drama
LOGLINE:

An American aid worker, mourning the death of her young son, finds hope in the most hopeless place on earth when she’s forced to flee to the jungle with a group of Congolese women after their village is attacked by rebels.

SYNOPSIS:

The Democratic Republic of Congo, ravaged by decades of conflict, is considered the most dangerous place on earth to be a woman. With more than six million dead and countless displaced, its citizens, particularly women and young girls, are subjected to unspeakable horrors by militias and the Congolese Army, who use rape, torture and murder as psychological weapons of war.

Onto this sun baked hellscape arrives Mia, an American aid worker and nurse, trying to escape the pain of losing her young son, and drawn to a world where everyone is touched by loss, and grief is the great equalizer.

Fresh in country, Mia is befriended by Trudi, a seasoned Aussie. When the truck they've hired breaks down, they're taken in by villagers, but this minor setback erupts into a full-blown nightmare when the village is overrun by bloodthirsty rebels.

The rebels massacre the villagers and capture Bienvenu, a teenage boy, who is forced to fight as a soldier. Emmanuel, just eight years old, and one of the few to escape unharmed, is left to fend for himself in the wilderness.

Mia and Trudi flee with three of the Congolese women, experiencing one disaster after another as they make their harrowing trek through the jungles of equatorial Africa, heading towards what they hope is a safe haven. Their fates intertwined, they must rely on one another if they stand the chance of surviving.
