OUR BETTER ANGELS

OUR BETTER ANGELS
By Steven Michael

GENRE: Drama, Family
LOGLINE:

A guilt-ridden teenage girl lives on the precipice of lawlessness, until
she must live with her great-uncle - a man wrongly convicted of child molestation. Through their growing love for each other, they struggle to overcome their respective betrayals.

SYNOPSIS:

Mallory is a 14-year old girl whose alcoholic mother died in a car accident because she was drunk. Roland is a 61-year old ex-con who served 10 years in prison for child rape. Mallory feels betrayed by her mother and internalizes this pain by blaming herself. Roland did not commit the crime for which he was incarcerated and feels betrayed by the government system that convicted him.

When Mallory, who has run away from three foster homes in two months, is assigned to Roland's care by juvenile court, both her and Roland's worlds are disrupted. He knows nothing about teenage girls, and she knows nothing about living on a farm.

Mallory hooks up with a small band of bad characters in school. Jag, the spoiled sociopath son of the wealthiest family in town, is the leader. Through tests of loyalty, Jag lures Mallory into his realm of narcissistic pranks and crimes.

Roland's nightmares of the beatings he took in prison haunt him. He also suffers from occasional seizures. After a seizure episode, he lies down to rest. Mallory stumbles upon old letters written by Roland's late wife Tess. She wrote to Roland in prison at a time when any semblance of love was absent in his world.

Through the letters and Mallory's newly formed love for animals, she confronts her feelings with Roland's help.

But Jag has different ideas for Mallory. He entices her to help him trash the school principal's office and computer room. Jag gets away, but Mallory is caught. She vows to shun Jag from that point forward.

The last act turns faster with a surprise ending and a final, emotional twist.

Through contention, arguments, newfound life passions, and personal confessions, these two very different people find their real selves and heal each other.

William Gunn

Interesting idea, but would the Authorities send a 14-year old girl to live with a Convicted Child Rapist? Wouldn't she have other relatives somewhere? I really don't know.

Steven Michael

Good question William. Answer is he was proven innocent after ten years in prison. All officials know this, and it's revealed very early. Thanks for the question.
