MEAN PARADISE

MEAN PARADISE
By Stephen Paul Chong

GENRE: Drama
LOGLINE:

A young man inherits a criminal empire and finds his directionless life
torn between a life of sex, power and money, or devotion to family, love
and friendships.

SYNOPSIS:

ALFRED is young (mid-20’s), strong and handsome, but his nights are haunted. Even uninhibited casual sex and booze cannot displace the nightmares. He even shuns the guiding wisdom of the BOOK OF MYSTERIES - his parent’s sacred legacy of many years past. Confronted with the news of his estranged foster-mother MARY’s murder, his directionless life is shattered. Mary has bequeathed him a fortune in cash, ownership of the infamous HAMMERHEAD BAR and a mysterious set of keys.

Alfred’s visit to Hammerhead opens up a world of personal confrontation. He renews acquaintance with henchmen BRUISER, NIFTY and CARVER and his ownership of Hammerhead compels him to deal with their criminal past misdeeds – and particularly those of his foster-mother

Alfred meets and is instantly attracted to the beautiful MAGDALENE - but his customary laws of attraction are thwarted. Meanwhile, he must decide to leave his otherwise comfortable but directionless world to discover who killed Mary. While in Hammerhead Bar, he is unable to resist the allure of ANGELIQUE, and their casual sex has dire consequences. The Book of Mysteries reveals Angelique’s dark heart and, enraged, she plots revenge. Meanwhile, Magdalene attends her political aspirant father’s (HOFFMAN) convention to become the new state senator.

Alfred meanwhile follows the trail of the mysterious set of keys that leads him to an old abandoned warehouse. He uncovers the drug manufacturing plant set up by Mary. He confronts Bruiser with his outrage only to learn of Mary’s capacity to help sick children in need - despite the dirty money and her criminal misdeeds. Bruiser, Nifty and Carver, meanwhile, discover Mary’s murderer - Chief of Police SCARROW. They vow revenge - but stay tacit to keep Alfred from harm.

The wisdom of the Book of Mysteries attempts to guide Alfred, but Mary’s misdeeds of the past lead him further into mire. She previously aided Hoffman to become senator by discrediting his rivals, at the same time as setting up another candidate to take down Hoffman. Meanwhile, Angelique feigns pregnancy and Alfred offers her three Faustian choices to escape her scam. She craves payback and uses Hoffman to get it.

Meanwhile, Alfred reveals the wonder and wisdom of the Book of Mysteries to Magdalene and their relationship blossoms - although he remains blissfully unaware that she is Hoffman’s daughter and campaign manager.

A secret dossier reveals Hoffman’s corruption and sexual-deviations. It falls into Magdalene’s hands and, in disgust, she vows to go public and stop her father winning the election. Neither Scarrow nor Hoffman can let that happen. They collude to save his campaign by plotting to abduct Magdalene until after the election.

In final confrontation, Alfred confronts Scarrow – but it is the Book of Mysteries that has the final say. Magdalene and the others then follow her father’s trail to ruin his political aspirations.

Finally, Alfred’s nightmares are no more. He has been transformed by love and friendship.
