Strange Fruit Synopsis By Rey Otis A devastating crash kills her best friend but Lyric Freeman survives and her injuries result in the ability to hear the dead and dying speak. She and her family are drawn into a supernatural conflict when the spiritual repercussions of the cruel legacy of slavery begin to haunt the present world. Nurses witness miracles every day, some larger and more profound than others. Harrison Dunwoodie suffers a terrible injury to his brain. He slides into a coma and the care of Nurse Lyric Freeman. Harrison begins to communicate with his nurse in an unconventional manner, and she hears him clearly. Hope is replaced by despair as other voices begin pouring through him: so loudly that he can only be heard during rare lapses in the cacophony. The voices belong to a brutalized group of slaves long dead. They are led by a powerful priestess and her twin stolen from their home and thrust into a life of unbearable pain and sorrow. One additional spirit is making herself heard through the hapless Mr. Dunwoodie: the crash that endowed Lyric with her gift killed another. Now she too is speaking through Mr. Dunwoodie. A crumbling estate that has hidden atrocities for more than a hundred years, a stop on the Underground Railroad meant to guide slaves to freedom and hope instead became the site of some of the worst abuses of human beings in the history of New England. And now it knows who Lyric is, and has begun to draw her to it. After Lyric’s husband Jak is brutally murdered, her daughter becomes inexplicably ill. The teen exhibits starvation symptoms and wounds on both wrists reminiscent of handcuffs, or slave shackles…As Michaela Freeman teeters between life and death, Jak begins to speak through Mr. Dunwoodie and directs his wife to the remains of a house that has hidden atrocities for a hundred and seventy years. Lt. Jeffrey Boyd, a detective agrees to accompany Lyric back to the house, the site of Jak’s encounter with the lifeless slaves that ended with his death. A surprise guide joins them at the insistence of Lt. Boyd: Harrison Dunwoodie. He has experienced a miraculous recovery, and knows what the demons have planned for Lyric…She must face Rachel, and release the fury that binds the shades to the place of their betrayal and murder. A terrifying night and day are spent in the house, a bloody battle ensues, Harrison Dunwoodie sacrifices himself to save his companions. We learn that he is a descendant of the slave ship captain that brought the doomed souls onto American soil and sealed their fates. Lt. Boyd and Lyric succeed in sending the dead to rest. Lyric returns to her life, Michaela is saved, there might even be a future for the widow and the brave cop. Lyric is returning home from work and witnesses a fiery crash. She gives life support to the crash victim who dies despite her efforts. A circle has been completed. At the moment of her death, Rachel speaks through the corpse: “Hello Lyric. Miss me? A large star shines more brightly in the night sky.
