By Sarah Hurst

GENRE: Drama
LOGLINE:

When gun-toting locals take over a hippie commune in Alaska during the shooting of a reality show, things go from bad to worse - which can only be good news for the show’s producers.

SYNOPSIS:

Pilot Episode: Taylor Lynch is getting out of prison in Arizona. His friend Ed Jackson picks him up and shows him a brand new hunting rifle in the trunk of the car. Taylor admires it. They head off back to Alaska. It is summer. The hippie residents of the Mironia commune on Alaska’s Kenai Peninsula are engaged in peaceful activities like harvesting burdock and playing in a chamber music quartet. At the daily meeting their “Convenor”, Theodore Wells, announces that Leilani Klim has won a place at Princeton. Leilani asks if she will be allowed to have a cell phone in college – Theodore says yes. A younger teen, Sam Matthews, challenges the rule that cell phones are prohibited on the commune. Diane Klim, Leilani’s mother, forcefully tells Sam that he has to follow the rules or leave. The commune residents vote on the issue and confirm that cell phones will still be banned. Rosie Macintosh, a researcher with a Los Angeles TV production company, arrives at the commune looking for “great characters” for a reality show. She meets Theodore, who is repairing a cow shed. He tells her he has 11 children. Theodore and Rosie get chased by a black bear. Rosie meets Diane, who is hostile. Paul Klim, Diane’s husband, is teaching a group of teens about Kafka’s “The Trial”. Rosie introduces herself and makes a video of the discussion. Meanwhile, Theodore is having sex with Hannah Matthews – Sam’s mother – in a cabin. Rosie does a video interview with Sam, who says he wants to get away from Mironia and that he hates Theodore. Theodore introduces Rosie to his buxom wife Jeannie, who has baked gingerbread. When Rosie has left the commune Theodore tells Jeannie there’s no way he’d allow the show to be made there. Rosie calls the producers and tells them Mironia would be great for the show. Rosie is staying the night at Big Jim’s Roadhouse. She encounters Taylor and Ed in the bar. Taylor is complaining about the government trying to take away his right to own a gun because he’s a convicted felon. Rosie tries to talk to them about appearing on the show, but Taylor tries to sexually assault her. Jonah Maximoff, a powerfully-built Alaska Native, intervenes and fights Taylor off. He tells Rosie that he’s the local doctor. The Mironia residents debate the offer of $45,000 from Elemental Productions for the commune’s participation in the show. This time the teens get the upper hand with their support for the show, plus the factor that Paul announces the commune is in severe financial difficulties. The residents vote to accept the offer. In the winter the production crew arrives at the commune to make the show. Executive producer Nick Bartok is a charmer, but field producer Laurie Wood is a tough cookie who hates the snow and thinks the commune is ridiculous. She immediately starts talking about changes to the commune that will have to be made for the show. Rosie lamely interjects that she thought the show was going to portray real life. Laurie is shocked to find that no one at the commune uses phones or does anything on a schedule. Laurie bumps into Taylor in the local grocery store. Talking to him, she realizes he would make a great character in the show. At the next production meeting Laurie talks about Taylor enthusiastically. Rosie is upset about the idea of Taylor being on the show and tells Laurie and Nick that he tried to sexually assault her. Laurie tells her to get over it. Leilani catches Sam using a cell phone. He admits that he got it on his last trip to Anchorage. He’s met a girl online who lives in Portland, and he wants to meet her. The producers fake a moose-hunting scene after finding out it’s not moose-hunting season. Without telling the commune residents, Laurie has brought in Taylor and Ed to pretend to hunt too and interact with the others, but she doesn’t realize that they’re carrying loaded guns. Taylor boasts to the commune residents about his shooting skills but accidentally wounds Hannah. Jonah, on set as the medic, rushes to help her. By Theodore’s reaction everyone can see that he is in love with Hannah.
