LOGLINE: A plucky tween finds himself choosing between keeping the peace with cultural traditions and saving the last of what was once thought a mythical creature.

SYNOPSIS:

Beau on talks with his grandmother, promises to learn the traditions of their culture from the elders before she dies. Just like his school life, he can't be depended upon as his distractions from computer games and the internet keep getting in the way. After failing to attend his first meeting with the elders, his disappointed grandmother tells him that a promise doesn't mean anything to him. Beau's life is steadily falling apart, his friends won't speak to him; his grandmother refuses to see him and he's been suspended from school. One evening whilst walking along the riverbank, he encounters a blue light streaking around him and the river. The light comes to a rest beside him and a bunyip appears. Returning from suspension, Beau struggles to keep up with his schoolwork and family duties and once again fails to follow through with his responsibilities. Frustrated and tired, he forgets to attend his meeting with the elders. With reports appearing in the news of a local sighting of a strange creature, Beau moves to take the bunyip from the river and locate its ancestors, against the warning of the elders. A Hunter contracted by an exotic species collector, prompting the contract be terminated after numerous failed trackings, is offered double or nothing to capture proof of the bunyip dead or alive. Beau and the Hunter encounter for the first time. The elders sense the danger at present have prevented anyone from pursuing Beau. His grandmother falls ill and is sent to hospital. Beau gives up and leaves the bunyip in a creek. Walking back to his town to consequences and the fate of his grandmother. Trophy collectors, hobbyists and fanaticals are closing down on the bunyip. The Hunter booby traps the surrounds of the creek and awaits the trap he has set for the bunyip. Beau returns to the creek only to find the remnants of the traps laid out and the bunyip gone. He finds burnt skeletal remains nearby. Beau doubts whether he can ever be trusted. His grandmother tells him that he can make a difference and his community needs heroes like him, those who choose the right thing even when it means giving up on their own personal ambitions. Beau’s grandmother passes away, leaving a huge hole in his heart. Meeting with the gathered crowd out hunting the bunyip, Beau rallies their support to save the bunyip. Beau stops the hunter from transporting the bunyip on a cargo plane, saving him in time. A hobbyist tells him of a location of ancestors to the bunyip. A delighted Beau returns to his home town in time for his formal right of passage in his community in front of the elders and brings the bunyip with him to stay.
