SYNOPSIS:

CHASING WHITE INFINITY “Chasing White Infinity” is a fast-paced story written along the lines of films like “Rush” and “Star Wars.” On the far away planet Retra, VALEN, a former engineer and hotshot VRS pilot (VRS are futuristic equivalent of our Formula One racing cars) has fallen into a deep depression for the loss of his best friend and teammate, he feels responsible for, and his leg in an accident during a race. His droll friend and mechanic DOST, convinces him to compete in the rocket race for planet Duo’s colonization. The prizes are rich allotments of land on the uncontaminated planet. Valen wants to fulfill a forgotten dream: build a revolutionary engine, a secret project he devised before becoming a racer, that could use cheap, clean and renewable energy in order to live in a better world. But Valen, disabled and broke, has an hard time entering a racing contest where a perfect physical fitness is needed, as well as money to buy a good rocket. Luckily he gets help from well known reporter Manish Mastap, who finds him a backer: Bioimplants sponsors Valen in exchange for experimenting for the first time with an “in locu” cloning of his leg, a long procedure he’ll have to keep undergoing during the whole competition. Valen agrees but the costs in terms of pain and risks with his flying maneuvers are high. Valen doesn’t know that his revolutionary engine project has been discovered, nor does he suspect that Manish, shortly after having found him a sponsor, is bribed by Retran tycoons who want to keep using dirty energy on future colonized planet Duo, and are eager to eliminate the pilot from the race. Before the competition, divided into three races (inspired by real Formula One race tracks), Valen falls in love with fascinating Star, who is one of his many fierce competitors. The three breathtaking races are alternated by two stops on Retra’s satellites. The virtual tracks, outlined in empty space, appear on the frontal windshield. They are filled with dangerous hairpin curves, chicanes, hazardous slopes, and opponents darting among countless pulsing stars, and planets with fixed and intriguing beams. If the first race is arduous due to risks of collisions and loss of propellant, the second one is grueling: a major accident severely injures Dost and badly damages Star’s aircraft. Star replaces Dost in the third race that reveals to be strenuous for its long and dangerous track, for the many engine failures, and for slimy opponents’ attacks. But Valen can count on his renewed love for speed and challenge to overcome his opponents, unmask cunning Manish, and finally land first on the desired allotment, winning the right to own it.

Very cool idea! I especially like how the race, its publicity, and the prize (allotments of land on the new planet) combine to achieve colonization. Reminds me of a movie version of something I might find in "Heavy Metal" magazine, and I mean that as a compliment. :)
