Failed sculptor Rachel Parente convinced herself she would be happy with just a boring job, exciting sex and the entrapping family cake business, but she must reconsider her life choices when late uncle Mario’s will makes her the owner of his villa in Italy, if she’ll start carving again.

SYNOPSIS:

Failed sculptor RACHEL PARENTE (35) medicates herself by creating artistic cakes her sister JUDY (34) successfully sells, and convinced herself she would be happy with just a boring job, exciting sex, and the cake business. Her overbearing father GIORDANO (67), Italian, diabetic, and deeply latrophobic, is concerned: not only Rachel gave up on her art, she also has an affair with her married boss ANDRUS (48), he hates, at the insurance agency she works in.

Rachel’s routine is suddenly broken by UNCLE MARIO’s will that makes her the owner of a beautiful villa in Italy, if she’ll accept his artistic legacy, and start carving again. Rachel’s initial joy, followed by deep irresolution, triggers a chain of reactions. Giordano buys two one-way plane tickets and presses her to move to Italy with him. He sees the will as an unique opportunity for his daughter to start anew, and for him to live in the country where he was born. Judy, scared to lose the cake business, worries Rachel by predicting she’ll have to live with Giordano in the villa, becoming money-dependent from him, and Andrus, who doesn’t want to lose a lover, gives her a raise and promises to divorce his wife. Rachel feels too worried, and too deeply confused to have the courage to turn her life around: insensible to Giordano’s anger, she refuses to leave.

But, despite herself, late Uncle Mario made Rachel want to carve again. She starts a new creation and accidentally hurts a hand, that is stitched at the E.R. by Dr. ALEXIS SALVATI (40) who visits her afterwards with the pretext to medicate the wound, and the two start a relationship. Alexis’ kindness make Rachel see Andrus’ narcissism, and her need to avoid him.

Giordano keeps pressuring her to move, mistreating Alexis when he meets him, for fear of his profession and because he might jeopardize the journey. Judy takes new orders for wedding cakes, and Andrus, upset about losing a sexy lover, proposes to her with a ring.

Unable to handle the situation, Rachel fights with her dad, refuses to bake the cakes, and visits Andrus’s home only to ascertain the ring belongs to his wife. She then decides to tell Alexis about her affair and the will, but Giordano, Judy, and Andrus all come to talk to her at the same time, starting an animated discussion. As Alexis wrongly understands Rachel has been cheating on him and leaves, Andrus and Giordano get into a fight that hurts the latter. The now furious Rachel lets Judy carry her father away but, when Andrus acts as if nothing had happened, she finally gathers the courage to repel him, and quit her job. She then tries to explain her behavior to Alexis who feels very disappointed and breaks up with her.

Grief-stricken, Rachel isolates herself as Giordano, feeling depressed and dejected, turns to eating, falls into a sugar coma, and eventually rushed to the Emergency Room, where Alexis has to take care of him. Heartbroken, Rachel promises to her unconscious father to go to Italy with him if he fully recovers. But when Giordano gets better he ponders about Rachel’s eagerness on leaving, for he finally understands his daughter is unhappy without Alexis, and that the pressures he put on her made her confused and unsecure, when he should have supported her in making the best choice for herself. He meets Alexis and talks to him.

To Rachel’s surprise Alexis shows up at the airport on the day of the departure. Giordano convinced him about Rachel’s love and gave his ticket to him. He also bought a two-way air fare to give his daughter the opportunity to choose. Rachel is moved, grateful, and happy to leave with Alexis for a journey that will allow both to know each other better, and decide for their future.
