Matt Toms

Sounds Like the Ocean is a small boutique music house in Sydney’s east, run by composer Matt Toms.

Originally from Byron Bay, Matt has been a professional musician for over 20 years, performing as a guitarist/singer as well as teaching guitar and ukulele. In 2007 whilst living in New Zealand Matt began composing music for small projects such as short films, and quickly moved into documentaries and television.

The music of Sounds Like the Ocean reflects Matt’s strong bond with the sea, with the easy rhythms and relaxed melodies that seem to go hand in hand with coastal life. As a guitarist, his music grows from, but is not limited to, guitars of all kinds, including slide, classical, acoustic, electric, baritone guitar, bass, ukulele, and even the charango.

In 2009, again in NZ, Matt took up the ukulele and in 2010 won the APRA Ukulele Songwriting Competition and performed in front of 5000 people at the NZ Ukulele Festival.
