THE FUNERAL

THE FUNERAL
By Simon Wilkinson

GENRE: Drama
LOGLINE:

An old man is laid to rest in a sleepy village churchyard, but old wounds are reopened for his family when terrorists try to hijack the funeral (a true story).

SYNOPSIS:

A three page live action short and a true story.

Bartle Gogarty left the IRA in 1922.

At his funeral in 1977 two masked men appear. They drape an Irish tricolour over his coffin at the graveside and produce handguns to fire a military salute.

The grieving family are incensed but also petrified until one of Bartle's daughter's bravely steps forward and challenges the terrorists.

She tells them to leave the family alone and let her father rest in peace, as he did not support their cause any more.

The terrorists leave with their flag and a flea in their ears as Bartle is laid to rest.

Great short Simon, it's action/character driven all with intense, suspenseful dialogue and a touching drama. Congrats and best of luck. Ps: writing shorts is something I need to master and your is a perfect example of a great short with all the elements and players of what makes a great short work. Thanks for sharing it here.

Thanks a million! It's actually a totally true story. The man being buried was my grandfather. Best wishes, Simon

Jorge J Prieto

Sorry, I just read your response. A true (based on your own grandpa)story? No wonder it all works so well. I gotta tell you, my first screenplay as an adult writer has many different elements of my own life. Thanks once again, buddy Simon.
