SYNOPSIS:

We open on a warehouse party in the art museum area of Philadelphia. An underground rave, and a gathering for those who live the “Vampire Lifestyle”. In attendance are David and Max, hiding among humans pretending to be dead, they are THE DEAD OF THE NIGHT. Real vampires who use this charade as a way to feed. Max is asked to the back to “share” blood with a woman, David is invited to join. David is the first to drink from her and he becomes violently ill. She’s poisoned him, and she knows she has, she did it on purpose. When he is unable to get information from her, he kills her. Two others witness the murder, so David and Max do the only think they can, they drain them too, killing them. Drinking blood is the only thing that seems to help David, and now he and Max are on the run from the police and desperate to find out what happened and why David was poisoned. However, David needs to constantly feed. They come upon a couple at Logan Square and drain them to keep David going, while in the process, they’re surprised by Julia, a contemporary of David’s and his personal nemesis. Julia has greater knowledge of what really happened to David and she, very happily, tells him that he was assassinated, and that his only hope is Anna, his maker. David, in an attempt to persuade Julia to help him, captures her scion promising his return when he’s safe at Anna’s. After leaving Julia, with her scion Ethan in tow, Max and David resume their trek across the city towards David’s maker and what seems to be his only hope for a cure, Anna. David, again, has to feed and leaves Max with Ethan while he goes to find a victim. When he finds one, after draining her, a security guard sees him, before he can do anything about this Max appears and kills the Guard, and someone else witnesses this murder. Since David knows that the police will come shortly he races back with Max to collect Ethan. Unfortunately Ethan’s gone. While still looking for Ethan they come under attack, David fights off their attackers, agreeing to meet them for a showdown in LOVE park. With Ethan still gone and their options running out David simply takes a seat on a bench in the park, knowing that the next twist will find him. It does in the form of Bertrand. He’s a human, who’s a lawyer and bag man for The Council, the governing body of Vampires. He’s the one who took Ethan and he’s there to collect David. David does not comply. After killing Bertrand and his escort he recaptures Ethan and races, again the rising sun, to take refuge in the Subways. When they arrive at the station they are confronted by the same group that attacked them earlier, this time they can see them: The Reprobo, large and slow, they’re newly made Vampires, and their strength is in their numbers. They fend off the attack, and in doing so David discovers something, that if he feeds on his own kind it helps restore his strength and stave off the illness for longer. Once down in the subways they run into Marcus, an old vampire who guards the underground. He allows them safe passage as long as they keep moving and stay off the radar of The Council and the Police. They don’t, while resting, two police officers approach them, Ethan lures one in close enough to him to bite him. After they kill the two officers Julia tracks them down. In a battle with her David, again, feeds on another vampire restoring his strength. After failing to comply with Marcus’s rules they’re banned from the subways, Ethan is returned to Julia, and Max and David are sent out on a train into the light and certain death. Death doesn’t come, they live by night, but they can walk by day. David finally gets to Anna’s and she tells him what he needs to do to cure himself. Though it sounds simple the task ahead is more difficult than any he’s had to face. He must drink the blood of an Elder, a Council member, who is at his home and being guarded by at least a dozen of his “family”.
