ACTIVE LIVING
By Judy Klass

GENRE: Drama
LOGLINE:

A gay, Japanese-American man whose partner has died moves into a homophobic "active living" center for older people -- and balks at pressure to be someone he's not.

SYNOPSIS:

George Takei is attached to this project. Hideo Matsuda, an older Japanese American man has recently lost his life-partner, and has health concerns of his own. His grown daughter, estranged from him until recently, convinces him to move into a senior center run by religious people, and not mention that he is gay. In the center he meets Everett, an almost blind older man, and hears gossip that he may be gay. They get to know each other and come out to each other. But as gossip about them starts up, Everett asks Hideo to stop dropping by. In their time apart, Hideo stands up to his daughter who has tried to keep his visits with his grandchildren a secret from his ex-wife. And Everett helps a young man in high school who volunteers at the senior center. The young man is being bullied for being gay on a track team his father forced him to join. Everett turns up at a practice, pretending to be the boy’s grandfather, and handles the coach and the other guys on the team. The relationship between Everett and Hideo takes a turn when Hideo comes to Everett and says he spent his childhood in an internment camp for Japanese Americans [which is true of George Take] and he spent years being treated as a token ethnic at his architectural firm, and denying that he was gay; he’s tired of apologizing for who he is, and he won’t let Everett do it anymore either. Once they get involved, the head of the senior center balks at the idea of them sharing an apartment as a couple. They promise to fight him. Some other older people in the cafeteria cut them dead – and some women they’re friendly with invite them over to their table.
