A native of Tampa, Florida, James Oscar Simmons (aka J. Oscar) graduated from Florida A&M University with a B. S. in Pharmacy. Acting soon became his kindred spirit and immersed himself in the local theater community. He began his journey by performing in local productions; Ceremonies in Dark Old Men, Happy Ending, Amateur Night at the Apollo hosted by Sinbad, as well as modeling and nurturing his musical talents.
J. Oscar decided move to Atlanta, Georgia to continue his concentration. He enrolled in an acting internship at the renown, Alliance Theater, under the artistic direction of Kenny Leon. While studying at the Alliance, he was met with many opportunities to continue "the craft" with seasoned performers like, the late Whitman Mayo(Sanford and Son), Phylicia Rashad(Cosby Show), the late Carol Mitchell-Leon and many others. J. Oscar sought the advice from the legendary Ruby Dee while working on the film "Cop and a Half", directed by Henry Winkler. It was this life changing meeting with Ms. Ruby Dee that sparked J. Oscar to put her advice into action. She stated, 'Mr. Simmons don't be an actor, be a producer. That way, if you want to star in it, you can, because it's yours!'
After moving to New York City in 2005, he booked small rolls in commercials like, "BET Census", feature film, "The Duel" and numerous commercial print ads. It was there J. Oscar decided "enough is enough" and sought to establish an environment where he could make his own choices in this industry. Thus, NVZIN CINEMA was born!
