A CAROL FOR CHRISTMAS
By Don Dobrez Jr

GENRE: Romance, Fantasy
LOGLINE:

A mysterious woman is sent to help a business owner and his neighbors save their small town and its Christmas festival from the local scrooge and ends up breaking the rules by falling in love.

SYNOPSIS:

It’s Christmas in Angel Falls meets A Christmas Carol and It’s a Wonderful Life. Carol, a twenty-something woman, is given her new assignment - a small town, Grover Mills, is at risk of losing its main street businesses as well as its Christmas festival (that brings in the bulk of its tourism each year) to a local Scrooge named Mr. Canoli. Carol arrives in town under the guise of writing a book. She begins with Mitch, the owner of a photo store, who is leading the crusade to save the town. There is an instant chemistry between them. Over a couple of days’ time, Mitch introduces her to the other business owners, and we see each one as they tell Carol their family business history and the attempts that Canoli has made to buy them out.

Carol and Mitch slowly fall for each other as they spend more time together. They reveal their romantic pasts – Carol was engaged before “an incident” that kept her from getting married, and Mitch had his heart broken by a skating champion. Through a series of events, we see Mitch make his “move” on Carol, who gives him various reasons why she can’t get involved. Obstacles keep getting thrown at them romantically (his ex comes back to town) and businesswise (Canoli makes him a substantial offer to sell, etc.) All this leads to a final confrontation between Mitch and Canoli that takes place at a packed town hall. Mitch is defeated, and the Christmas Festival is cancelled. The next day, Christmas Eve, Mitch invites Carol to his family’s traditional Christmas Eve dinner. Once his family leaves, Mitch and Carol finally kiss, even as Carol says she can not stay and that she must upload her “book” and report into her boss before the night is over.

Feeling in love, Mitch ventures out for his Christmas Eve tradition of shooting photos of the town while its resident’s sleep. He is shocked to see Carol through the window of Canoli’s home study, as she talks to him in the dead of night. Mitch rushes home, crushed. Christmas morning comes, and Mitch confronts Carol about what he saw. She breaks down and admits that she is the “Ghost of Christmas Present”, sent to find out about Canoli in order to give him the “Scrooge treatment”. Mitch is agitated, but after meeting the Ghosts of “Christmas Past” & “Christmas Yet to Come”, he realizes she is telling the truth. Now with Canoli a changed man, and the festival back on, Carol must find a way to stay with Mitch, even if it means giving up her immortality.
