The story of The is about a normal, easily forgotten man who finds himself trapped on the other-side of his mirror. There he finds a world that is a grotesque literal reflection of ours, a place where everything is rotting and decaying, including the people in it. It is a place where there isn't one monster, because everyone there is a slowly becoming a monster. Our man renames himself Ragface as he joins forces with a woman and child to form a pseudo family unit to escape the other side and its oldest and most brutal inhabitant, the Gasman. This movie is about the unseen people that society has forgotten, the subculture they create for themselves and their battle to retain their humanity against impossible odds. We come to know Ragface, a faceless low-income drone, Quills, a one time drug addict, and Lamplight, the child who is always someone else’s problem. And then there is Gasman, a soldier from a war no one can remember, a soldier still fighting that war in his own head. This movie is really about homelessness, and there is not, at this point in our history, a more apropos subject to explore through horror. This film does just that while also placing itself in a fantastical setting to provide a safe distance for audiences to still have fun. With a classic grindhouse style, this monster film has kills as big as its ideas. The biggest idea is that the real monsters aren’t the ones in our film, but the people in the real world who do not see them.
