About Alison

Composer. Musician. Social Media Maestro. Nordic Noir Junkie.

I grew up on Cockatoo Island in Sydney harbour, surrounded by industry and the sea. It was a childhood fueled by creativity and imagination. I went on to become a classically trained composer specialising in ethnomusicology and, paradoxically, playing in electronic dance bands. After graduating from the NSW Conservatorium of music, I entered academia for a time, lecturing in linguistics at the University of Sydney.

My true passion is composing music and sound – how it makes you feel, how it can change the tone and ambiance of a picture and create a narrative. Since founding Groove Q with Dave Smith in 2001, I've delivered emotive & award-winning results for clients. Creative partners value my listening & observation skills, technical mastery, & creative advice.

This year I served as a juror for the 4th (2015) AACTA Awards. The awards recognise professional excellence in the film & television industry, including directors, actors & writers. It is the most prestigious awards ceremony for the Australian film & television industry.
