About Stuart

Stuart Sender is an award-winning filmmaker, journalist, speaker and teacher whose credits include two documentary films nominated for Academy Awards.

Stuart’s recent projects include working as a producer for the acclaimed Showtime series Years of Living Dangerously. The series, winner of a 2014 Emmy Award, investigates stories of climate change from around the globe. Stuart produced segments for the series featuring Matt Damon.

Harmony, A New Way of Looking at Our World is a television special and documentary film, which Stuart wrote, produced and directed in a unique collaboration with His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales (Prince Charles). Harmony, which explores the global environmental and economic crisis, as well as solutions to it, premiered at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. where it was introduced by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and then was broadcast as a primetime special on NBC.

The theatrical version of Harmony premiered at the first London Sundance Film Festival and was introduced by Prince Charles and Sundance Founder Robert Redford. The New York Times called Harmony “breathtaking and beautifully filmed.” The movie is being distributed by Discovery International.

Stuart wrote, produced and directed Prisoner of Paradise, which was nominated for an Academy Award and a Directors Guild Award for best documentary feature. Stuart was Executive Producer of The Garden, also nominated for an Academy Award for best documentary.

Stuart wrote the story for the movie The Vow starring Channing Tatum and Rachel McAdams. Based on a true story of a young woman who loses all memory of meeting and marrying her husband after a traumatic car accident, The Vow was released in theaters on Valentines Day. Stuart has also written the screenplay adaptation of the environmental thriller The Golden Spruce: A True Story of Myth Madness and Greed with author John Vaillant.

Stuart helped launch and was Senior Producer of the award-winning weekly newsmagazine South Africa Now, which was broadcast on 200 PBS stations and internationally. The program challenged the censorship laws of South Africa’s apartheid regime, broadcasting banned footage of protest and violence that was smuggled out of South Africa’s townships. He also worked as an on-air reporter for the program. South Africa Now won a Polk Award for excellence in journalism and a New York Emmy award for best newsmagazine.

A career and life highlight was traveling to South Africa where Stuart produced the first exclusive interview with Nelson Mandela following President Mandela’s release from prison. And he was Senior Producer of Nelson Mandela: Free at Last a nationally broadcast documentary for PBS.

Stuart is also a sought after speaker, talking to corporations about creativity and storytelling as well as corporate social responsibility and business and sustainability. He recently delivered a talk at TEDx Gateway connected to his film project The F Word - stories of Forgiveness.
