THE BEAR

THE BEAR
By John Kerr

GENRE: Historical
LOGLINE:

A multi generation tale set against the backdrop of California history that is best described as "Lonesome Dove" meets "The Godfather."

SYNOPSIS:

Sean McGuire, a teenage boy, flees famine ravaged Ireland and arrives in Monterey on the eve of the Bear Flag Revolt. A Chinese cook travels to Gum Saan to seek his fortune. An Indian, guides the first cattle drive from Texas to California. A former slave escapes his owner and is taken in by McGuire, now a rancher. The stories of these characters and their offspring are interwoven in an intricate tapestry that stretches from the beginning of the 31st state, right up to weeks before the Manson murders.

California is unique in that it was borne out of the dream and myth of quick riches and fame, first from gold, and then Hollywood. Like a dream, nothing is what is appears to be in the Golden State, even death. The tale of Sean McGuire and his grandson, Michael, is one of murder, wars and achieving the American Dream. A dream that is maintained by money, guns, movies and drugs. It is a story of family, loyalty and duplicity where no one is innocent, and the streets run red with blood.
