About Wayne

Wayne Slaten is an American independent movie director, screenwriter and producer. He began developing and directing short film projects under the shingle Moonlite Filmwerks in 2007. Slaten wrote and directed his first feature length movie Backroad in 2010. His film Cold War was selected as part of an international short film competition to screen at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival. That same year, Slaten’s script for Patriot Act (later titled Dropa) was a quarterfinalist in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Nicholl Fellowships in Screenwriting competition. Two years later, he directed the spy-thriller Osprey followed by the short film Red Pearl which screened aboard the International Space Station and went on to win the NASA Jury Award at the CineSpace Film Festival and later aired on PBS. Through F.64 Films Slaten directed the artist documentaries Ash: The Art of Wayne Gilbert and Dali On Acid along with the sci-fi feature film Dropa currently available through the Showtime Networks. He is now in production on the spiritual drama The Crossing scheduled to be completed later this year.

This film documents Gilbert's creative process, showing him at work in his studio along with a series of interviews with the artist, as well as some of his contemporaries and critics adding context to the artist's body of work. Wayne Gilbert's paintings utilize unclaimed human remains donated from funeral homes resulting in pieces that literally skirt the line between life and death. Gilbert's paintings are powerful statements that raise questions about culture, society and ultimately the relationship between art and humanity. Written by F.64 Films
