A desperate man hitches a ride with a strange old Scotsman; a ride that will change his life forever.

SYNOPSIS:

Only in his twenties, John Roberts finds the very fabric of his life crumbling around him. Two years of unemployment have systematically taken away everything he cares about, including his girlfriend.Broke, alone, and soon to be homeless he miraculously receives a request for an interview and almost certainly a job.The catch is he must be in Phoenix by Friday. With barely enough money for gas John heads for Phoenix in his 1984 Volvo. An ill-advised short cut and broken water pump later he finds himself stranded in front of an old general store in the middle of the Arizona desert.

John has an unusual encounter with the old Indian proprietor and meets Elijah, a cranky, old, Scotsman. Desperate and running out of time he tries to talk Elijah into giving him a ride in his beat-up old pickup. A mystical event opens the way and Elijah reluctantly agrees. As they travel the dusty back roads a series of simple but profound events unfold. They see an old Indian praying to a large rock. Elijah stops and without a word walks over and simply touches the giant boulder. They stop in a small village ravaged by drought. Although its people are extremely poor a young girl presents the young man with a bundle of fresh corn tortillas. An old woman is given back her sight. A violent storm teaches the true nature of perspective. They accidentally run over a coyote, an event that openly changes the young man as he touches death for the first time. A small child leads them to his sick mother. Elijah is shot while trying to help the child’s mother. John tries to save Elijah. Elijah will have no part in going to a hospital and makes John take him to a campsite they used the night before.

He teaches the John the secret of echoes from heaven. John wants no part of it. He wants the job and his old life. Elijah mysteriously disappears during the night. John takes Elijah’s truck and makes it to his interview, only to discover from a mute child that his destiny lies in listening to and following the echoes from heaven.
