SHIRLEY, GOODNESS, AND MERCY
By Greg Wait

GENRE: Comedy, Drama
LOGLINE:

For three grown sisters, burying their mother is going to be hard. Burying the hatchet may be impossible.

SYNOPSIS:

In "Shirley, Goodness, and Mercy," three very different sisters come back together to attend the funeral of their quirky single-mom. Dealing with their mother's death while juggling family and friends takes its toll on each as childhood issues and unresolved resentments come to the surface. The youngest, SHIRLEY (early thirties), left home years ago to see the world and travel. She’s just landed at the airport and is rushing to make it to the memorial service. MERCY (40-ish), the oldest, runs a small local realty company. Type-A, driven, and uncompromisingly responsible, she’d like nothing better than to get through this day as efficiently as possible. Between them there’s GOODNESS (mid-thirties). The middle child, “Goodie” lives in town with her husband and two children. Relentlessly optimistic, she tries to fix every problem and make everyone happy all the time. With one sister confiding that she wants to sell the house and the other confiding she’d like to move in, Goodie’s got her work cut out for her. Things get off on the wrong foot when Shirley is late to the service, reinforcing Mercy’s opinion that she’s undependable and doesn’t care about her family and responsibilities. Goodness does what she’s always done, trying to smooth over their differences and make everyone happy. Once underway, the service goes smoothly enough, aside from an interruption by the unfashionably late and chronically confused great-aunt Edna who disrupts the service by asking which is the “Bride’s side?” After the service things move on to their mother’s house where the sisters’ issues begin to surface in earnest and tensions rise. Mercy resents Shirley’s carefree lifestyle, Shirley resents being the scapegoat for Mercy’s choices, and Goodie tries desperately to run interference between the two. Will they find comfort and healing within their childhood walls despite the fact that they can't all get what they want?
