SYNOPSIS:

Her Godmother is a coming of age book in the magical/fantasy genre that tells the story of young Allie and the godmother that teaches her the everyday magic of life. Young Allie is in the chaos of a dysfunctional family. We first encounter Allie going upstate New York with her mother, Darla who has left Allie's alcoholic father. Allie is experiencing a family breakup. Her father is a nurse suffering from alcoholism recklessly endangers Allie. Allie's mother, Darla, decides to relocate to help Allie make a transition toward a happier life. For the time being Allie stays with her godmother, Brigid, who lives in rural upstate New York and who has opened her heart and her home. The country offers Allie so many things she comes to love. There's Jupiter, the oversized loveable albeit clumsy dog, Sally (the mysterious black cat with a secret of her own), the family of skunks that live under the house and of course, Elizabeth Patrice and bob, the bats that live under the roof. Through her godmother's eyes Allie begins to see the everyday magic that surrounds her. Allie is having a wonderful time until one fateful night. As she begins to drift into sleep, she is awakened suddenly by a rumble and crash. Startled,She quickly sits up trembling from the clamor of the violent storm suddenly raging outside. Her room lights up like daylight as if someone put the light on then off in her room! The giant drum roll of the storm pounds again. She gets up from her bed to close the window. She had never seen a storm like this. Brooklyn storms seemed quieter. As she begins to close the curtains, she notices something outside. At first, she only hears the storm because it's so dark outside. The rain pounds on the roof like a roar. Suddenly flashes of light change night into day seconds at a time. Temporarily blinded by the sharp brightness of lightening against the dark her eyes begin to adjust. She is suddenly aware that there is something moving rapidly around down on the lawn. Straining her eyes against the silver streaking of rain on the window she sees that there, on the lawn, is her godmother, dancing in the storm. This book deals with both the "coming of magical age" as well as "coming of age" in that Allie learns to hold herself blameless for her father's disease. With the power she learns about the Craft from her godmother Allie learns not to yield to guilt or the mind games that often accompany the behaviors of alcoholics. As a result, this conflict culminates in her ability to hold her father responsible for his own recovery and to not let him place blame on anyone else which in turn leads him to commit to his own rehabilitation and recovery. Delivered with the compassion a wise Witch can provide, her godmother gently guides her toward the strength Wicca has to offer in all areas of life. HER GODMOTHER will also provide education, enlightenment and entertainment for adult children of alcoholics still grappling with alcohol related issues. As an adult child of an alcoholic myself I wrote this from my heart and personal experience in the hopes that this novel may help many begin to heal.
