ATOMIC HEIGHTS - FEATURE

ATOMIC HEIGHTS - FEATURE
By Sarah Gabrielle Baron

GENRE: Action, Sci-fi
LOGLINE:

Fifteen years after the Fall, survivalist teenagers battle radioactive mutants on snowmobiles.

SYNOPSIS:

ACT ONE:SEAN, a well-muscled teen-ager, lives on a farm with his dad, CAL, his step-mother, and GERTRUDE and Gertrude's son, the diminutive HAVEN. The adults starve so the boys can eat, because in this new world, people will do anything so their children can survive. Cal sends the boys on a trek into town on their own; they're old enough, and maybe they will meet some girls. Gertrude disapproves. At the trader's shop, they meet some natives (Sean instantly falls in love with Nahanni), and must co-operate when the shop is attacked by a group of Killers led by crazy MISHIP. After trysting at the native's reserve, everything changes when Sean returns home to find the place ransacked, the women gone, and Cal mortally ill. Cal dies, and with this deep snow, Sean steals the snowmobile from the trader's shop. This snow-machine has been retrofitted to take hydrogen fuel cells. At the native reserve, same thing, all the women kidnapped, and everyone else terrified of 'monsters'. Sean and two native warriors go out on snowmobiles to get the women back. ACT TWO:The 'monsters' are radioactive mutants. They can burn through any material with a touch. They have glowing green eyes, and can disappear and reappear at will. They can not speak, seem to have ESP with each other. They kill Sean's aboriginal mates, and Sean is saved at the last minute by the group of Killers.Sean tries to convince Miship to cooperate, but Miship's motto is "kill or be killed". They are separated in a chase scene. Sean enters the mutant's lair alone. It's an old uranium processing facility. He can't free the jailed, dying women. He can't find Nahanni. He is sick. The PROFESSOR finds him, heals him with his stem-cell elixir. Sean and Nahanni are re-united...the Professor wants them to have sex. Nahanni berates Sean for not having a plan. Sean convinces the Professor to let him go out to hunt. Sean returns with a venison hind (he's hidden the hydrogen fuel cells from his snow mobile in the hind). Sean enters an operating room, and the 'attendant' nurse is...Gertrude!ACT THREE:Gertrude is evil towards Sean, controlling, tells him the back story of how she was the Professor's aid before the 'fall', and the mutant boys are all clones from her original son! She doesn't care about Haven, he never loved her. These boys have ESP with her, like they do with their father the Professor. She wants to take it all over - they are the future!Sean tries to act out against Gertrude, but is put in a locker, just like Miship. Sean uses seduction to convince the Professor to let him out. Together, Miship and Sean take the Professor captive, get Nahanni (it's implied she may have been impregnated with a mutant zygote). Finally, Miship agrees to sacrifice himself so Sean and Nahanni can escape. Sean must face Gertrude one-on-one, to escape her and her mutants. He kills her with his trademark weapon, the axe. Sean and Nahanni drive away into the blinding snow, close-up on Nahanni's belly: and a re-call to the main theme, that in the new reality, it's not 'co-operation', or 'kill or be killed' that drives us, it's the fact that people will do anything for their children.
