About Tommy

Tommy Gray is an Irish composer and drummer currently based in Dublin.

Since graduating from the prestigious Newpark Music Centre with first class honours in 2010, Tommy has performed with musicians from around the world. He is a prominent figure on the Irish jazz and improvised music scene, and a sought-after session musician in the world of contemporary popular music, appearing locally on RTÉ television and radio, TG4, Lyric FM, and numerous performances at the National Concert Hall, as well as radio and television abroad, and festivals inside and outside of Ireland.

As a composer, Tommy is skilled in a wide range of idioms. His time at Newpark Music Centre saw him study jazz composition from throughout the last century. Upon graduating, he turned his attention to the work of such composers as Claude Debussy, Maurice Ravel, Igor Stravinsky, Béla Bartók, Arnold Schoenberg, and Aaron Copeland.

In recent times, Tommy has been focusing on music for film—studying the work of film composers Jerry Goldsmith, Bernard Herrmann, Miklós Rózsa, Alex North, Leonard Rosenman, Thomas Newman and Howard Shore. His own work in this area began on the independent feature-length noir thriller Opus K (2011) written and directed by his brother, Eamonn Gray.

Having such a broad range of influences and experience to draw from gives
Tommy's work great depth, marrying craft and technique with an intensely creative and expressive sensibility.
